The science and formulas needed to create a winning organization and culture by bringing out the best in people

I love this book because it explains the WHY behind good management. I know what happens when I use positive, immediate consequences, and I see what happens if I use threats or positional authority. This book explains the science of why different consequences provide different results. It also explains the power of discretionary effort. There are so many books that explain techniques. This book goes far beyond those as it describes the principles underlying all techniques. Once you understand the principles it is easy to understand why some things work and others fail miserably. Very good book. The biggest trouble you will have is deciding where to start in the application of the science. There are so many processes that can be improved.

Slow beginig, beautiful ending

When I went through the first few chapters of this book it seemed like it's going to be tough read. Too technical and without enough practical examples. However the second half of th book, last few chapters in particular were well worth the reading. I still wish there would be a bit more examples of positive reinforecement through real life stories. That's why I give it 4/5.

I recomend it to anyone who want's to learn about good leadership practices that are proven by science and not just another fad.

A good read for supervisors looking to become better supervisors

Very interesting read. Not finished with it yet and will re-read it. Was given a hard copy by my company (as I am classified as a supervisor) and purchased the Kindle version so I wouldn't have to carry the hard copy around. The author talks about the different types of reinforcement and how doing nothing can cause as much damage as doing the wrong thing. Look forward to finishing and learning from this book. I would also recommend
'Turn the Ship Around'. It would be a companion to this one when your finished. And if you like me 'Exercise Change' is a good book on what it takes to make changes in your life.

Then bigger animals. And bigger. And bigger still." Then he apologizes to his sister. At school, he is nice to everyone, even the principal, and hands out cupcakes to help resolve conflicts. Having established peace at home and at school, he is ready to expand his horizons. With the help of his family he goes on a "world tour" around town with a van full of cupcakes to distribute to appreciative crowds. Although world peace is a serious issue, Proimos's tongue-in-cheek approach makes the "can do" message fun and child friendly. The text is short and snappy with only one or two sentences on most pages. The simple cartoon drawings, filled in with color, have attitude and personality that matches the tone of the text. Creative page layouts and artsy fonts give the illustrations added energy. Super cute and a MUST for the b-day recipient who wants "World Peace"

I thought this was a lovely book. Paulie Pastrami is an endearing 8-year old character who outlines how he achieved World Peace - at the impressive age of 7. As the book outlines, he started off by being kind to small animals, watering flowers, listening to the river, and then turning his attention to mankind. This book is filled with little tidbits of wisdom such as apologizing when we do something wrong, listening more, sharing with others, offering compassion, working hard, finishing what we start, laughing at ourselves and crying with others. Paulie's determination to achieve World Peace (which he thinks he accomplished through giving away an enormous amount of cupcakes) is just one of those lovely "feel good" stories that ultimately sends home the basic message to kids that through kindness, compassion, and grace, regardless of our age, we ALL can achieve our own little bit of "World Peace" and make the lives of those we encounter a more pleasant and enjoyable experience. It's not "what" we give, it's that we give of ourselves.

My spouse ALWAYS states that he wants "World Peace" for his birthday and holidays. This year for his Birthday, our kids gave him this book along with a batch of cupcakes with the message "World Peace - Achieve the Dream"- Mission Accomplished!

About the Author
James R. McGuigan owns and operates his own numismatic investment firm. Prior to this business, he was Associate Professor of Finance and Business Economics in the School of Business Administration at Wayne State University. He also taught at the University of Pittsburgh and Point Park College. Dr. McGuigan received his undergraduate degree from Carnegie-Mellon University; his M.B.A. at the Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago and his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to his interests in economics, he has co-authored several well-known books on financial management.

R. Charles Moyer earned his B.A. in Economics from Howard University and his M.B.A. and Ph.D. in Finance and Managerial Economics from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Moyer is Dean Emeritus of the College of Business at the University of Louisville and Professor of Finance and Entrepreneurship. He is Dean Emeritus and former holder of the GMAC Insurance Chair in Finance at the Babcock Graduate School of Management, Wake Forest University. Previously, he was Professor of Finance and Chairman of the Department of Finance at Texas Tech University. Dr. Moyer also has taught at the University of Houston, Lehigh University, and the University of New Mexico and spent a year at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. Dr. Moyer has taught extensively abroad in Germany, France, and Russia. In addition to this text, Moyer has coauthored two other financial management texts. He has been published in many leading journals, including Financial Management, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Finance, Financial Review, Journal of Financial Research, International Journal of Forecasting, Journal of Economics and Business, Strategic Management Journal, and Journal of Industrial Organization. Frederick H. deB. Harris (Rick) is Professor of Economics and Finance at the Schools of Business, Wake Forest University. Dr. Harris holds a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia and a Dartmouth College A.B. in Economics. His specialties are pricing tactics and capacity planning in product markets as well as price discovery in financial markets and security market design. He has taught managerial economics required courses in the M.A. in Management and M.B.A. programs and elective B.A., B.S., M.S., M.B.A., and Ph.D. courses at Wake Forest, the University of Texas, and William and Mary, as well as several universities in France, Italy, Germany, and Australia. Dr. Harris has earned two school-wide Educator of the Year awards and two Researcher of the Year awards. Other recognitions include Outstanding Faculty (Inc., 1998 and 2001), Outstanding Faculty (Business Week's Guide to the Best Business Schools, 1997-2004), Board of Associate Editors (Journal of Industrial Economics, 1988-2003), and the Runner-up Prize (European Corporate Governance Institute, 2007). His numerous publications have appeared in leading journals in economics, finance, and operations, such as the Review of Economics and Statistics, The Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Financial Markets, The Journal of Operations Management, and The Journal of Business Ethics. He also writes with practitioners in the Journal of Trading from Institutional Investor Inc. and in the Inform's Journal of Revenue and Pricing Management.

Decision Neuroscience addresses a fundamental question about the nature of behavior: How does the brain process reward and make decisions when faced with multiple options? The neural bases of reward and decision-making processes are of critical interest to neuroscientists because of the fundamental role that reward plays in a number of behavioral processes and because of their theoretical and clinical implications for understanding dysfunctions of the dopaminergic system in numerous neurological and psychiatric disorders.

Organized into five parts―ranging from basic anatomical and electrophysiological findings on the contribution of specific brain structures to decision-making processes, to brain disorders involving dysfunctions of decision making and the reward system, to computational approaches combining Bayesian, game-theory, and neuroeconomics models―this updated and expanded edition provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the neuroscience of reward and decision-making processes.

About the Author
Dr Jean-Claude Dreher (research director, CNRS, http://dreherteam.cnc.isc.cnrs.fr/en/). Dr Dreher is the director of the Neuroeconomics, Reward and Decision making team at the 'Centre de Neurosciences Cognitives' (Lyon, France). He studied Mathematics, psychopathology and Cognitive Neuroscience in Paris. The general approach of his research group is to characterize the brain mechanisms underlying motivation and decision making in healthy subjects and to study neurological and psychiatric disorders in which these mechanisms are dysfunctional. He received two Fellow Awards for Research Excellence at the NIH. He is the author of around 40 research papers and the editor of the 'Handbook of Reward and Decision Making' (Academic PRess, Elsevier, 2009). His research has been highlighted in major scientific journals (Nature Reviews Neuroscience, PNAS, TiCS) and featured in a international media (newspapers, radio and TV programs).

A heavy read which demands thorough attention, but worth it!

Gottman's 1994 book comes on the heels of groundbreaking work in behavioral observation methodologies. Trained as a mathematician, Gottman spares us no quantified details. However, quantification and reliable measurement are the indispensible components of good scientific research of which Gottman's work is a nearly overwhelmingly thorough example. Gottman takes us back stage to the development and the testing of hypotheses about what makes marriages tick and what makes them wind down in very convincing fashion. I lecture from this text in my university course and student attention is usually very high and they ask many questions. The fact that Gottman can predict marital dissolution, in some instances, at better than 90%, is itself a testament to his rigourous and insightful work. Isn't that one of the main points of science: to predict?

Gottman presents a thorough look at the methodology used in his studies of marital interation and divorce prediction. I believe this text is a must for the bookshelves of professional researchers. Laypersons might enjoy his trade books written with Nan Silver.
