One book of the excellent series on learning fractions -- perfect for my 4th grader

If it wasn't for this book, my fourth grader would have struggled much more with the concepts that were very briefly covered in class and assigned or homework. In our school, a parent needs to be heavily involved in the education process of a student. Thankfully this series exists: I've used the Multiplying and Dividing book, too.

About the Author

GAVIN KENDALL is Professor of Sociology at Queensland University of Technology, Australia. His research interests include social theory, social order and the relationship between culture and socio-technical problems. His previous books include Using Foucault's Methods (with Gary Wickham), Understanding Culture (with Gary Wickham) and State Democracy and Globalization (with Roger King).
 
IAN WOODWARD is Senior Lecturer in Cultural Sociology at Griffith University, Australia and a Faculty Fellow of Yale University's Centre for Cultural Sociology, USA. In addition to publishing many papers on the cultural aspects of cosmopolitanism, he has written extensively on consumption practices, subject-object relations and material culture. He is the author of Understanding Material Culture.
 
ZLATKO SKRBIS is Professor of Sociology at the University of Queensland, Australia. His research interests are located in the intersecting area of migration, nationalism, and globalization. He is the author of Long-Distance Nationalism and Constructing Singapore (with Michael Barr), and his recent articles include papers in the Sociological Review, Theory, Culture& Society and Ethnic and Racial Studies. He is a lead investigator on a longitudinal study of Australian young people and their life trajectories.

Great Collection

This is the best collection of solo piano Christmas music I have found. The arrangements are probably not advanced, but they aren't easy either and they sound great (i.e harder than they are). I especially like "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" which has been reworked in a jazzy vein.

If you are an advanced player, you will be able to sight read these easily. Intermediate players should be able to practice and get them up to speed without too much trouble. I always get a great response when I play these for people.

The printing is very clear; no squinting to read the notes on the staff. I also appreciate the clear musical notation and instruction (metronome speeds are listed, none of this Keverenesque "Mystically playful" nonsense).

If you are looking to find a great Christmas book, look no further. This is the only one you will need.

Not advanced, but worth owning

The level of difficulty here is advanced-beginner or lower-intermediate, definitely not advanced. But the arrangements are very well done so that they sound a lot more advanced than they are. They're great for sight-reading on the spur of the moment, which is what most players probably want from Christmas music. After all, it's played only once a year and is probably not something you want to spend a lot of time practicing. Most Christmas favorites--some you might not expect--are included. Also, several of the arrangements are startlingly original and wonderful fun to play. I recommend this collection strongly and give it four stars only because of the misleading title.

About the Author
Paul Martin Lester is a tenured, full professor of communications at California State University, Fullerton. After receiving an undergraduate degree in journalism from the University of Texas at Austin and working as a photojournalist for The Times-Picayune in New Orleans, Lester received his Master's from the University of Minnesota and a Ph.D. from Indiana University in mass communications. He is the author or editor of VISUAL JOURNALISM: A GUIDE FOR NEW MEDIA PROFESSIONALS (with Christopher R. Harris); IMAGES THAT INJURE: PICTORIAL STEREOTYPES IN THE MEDIA, Second Edition (with Susan Ross); DESKTOP COMPUTING WORKBOOK, PHOTOJOURNALISM AN ETHICAL APPROACH; and THE ETHICS OF PHOTOJOURNALISM. In addition, Lester has published numerous articles in major communications journals. He has given keynote speeches, panel discussions, presentations and workshops throughout the United States and in Australia, Canada, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, and the Netherlands. Lester's areas of expertise include e-learning, photojournalism practice, mass media and professional ethics, desktop and Internet publishing, visual communications, and new communications technologies.

Great Read. Great Examples. Great Text!

In addition to my graduate course on communications by design, this book was enlightening and a good read; clarity, examples, and history on each of the elements of visual communications. Rented this book for class, but will be purchasing it soon as a superior reference guide.

Irritating Repetition

The author's writing style is rather irritating. He repeats himself over and over in different words. It does explain the topics "OK," but I think I learn more in class than I ever will from this book.

Loved it

Very good read. I couldn't put it down - well, not quite. But it builds the suspense nicely. And has a "retro" feel to it (One of the heroes drives a Rover 2000). Made me track down the movie and watch it. Then I went back and read the book again - and I virtually never do that.

Art's Story is the fourth and final book in the Coll and Art series - after Diving In, In the Deep End and Sink or Swim. It describes what happens when Coll comes back from Canada - whether the lovers get back together or not. I was very keen to write it in Art the boyfriend's voice; I think it's fascinating the way the same relationship can be such a different event for the boy. I loved creating Art's voice (so different to Coll's) and describing Coll through his eyes. Some of his harsh behaviour in the first three books is explained.
But when I sent the first 7000 words to my publishers they hated it: they said Art was too dark, too much of a threat to Coll. They wouldn't give me a contract to finish it. Later I posted those 7000 words on my website and I got lots of lovely emails telling me to finish it. So I did.

A great conclusion

This book is very different from the original three books in the trilogy by Kate Cann. Also unlike the other three books which are told from Coll's perspective, this book is from the perspective of Art. I liked reading this book a lot, I feel like it answered many questions I had about Art that were not previously mentioned. The book elaborates on what happens to Art and Coll after the end of the third book, but it also explains what Art was thinking from the beginning, and what happened when he was in New Zealand. I think that this book Art's Story is a great wrap up for the series, and an excellent chance to get inside the mind of character that always seemed slightly hard to understand and vexing at times. For lovers of the original three books by Kate Cann, I highly recommend reading this one. While different, it places a new perspective on a series and characters that we are rather familiar with already.

I loved this one. Even if it was written in a kinda diary-way it was splendid!
I think this is a must to read. Art is my favorite in the other books, he's so dark end twisted, and here you get som guyish explanation.
Brilliant!!!!
Tho the very end was a little abrupt, but still good

Ugh. I loved it. Art's point of view is quite choppy, but the way the need is conveyed between Art and Coll is fantastic, quite realistic of two people in love. Disappointed that I still wish there was more, though :( Now I must find something else to read.
