About the Author

J Scott is a full-time real estate investor and rehabber currently living in the suburbs of Washington, DC (formerly living and investing in Atlanta, GA). He is originally from the East Coast, and until Spring of 2008, he resided in Silicon Valley (California), where he spent many years in management at several Fortune 500 companies.

In 2008, J and his wife decided to leave the 80-hour work weeks and the constant business travel behind. They quit their corporate jobs, moved back East, started a family and decided to try something new. That something new ended up being real estate, and five years later, they've built a successful business buying, rehabbing and reselling single family homes.

Since 2008, J and his wife have rehabbed over 150 of their own houses for millions of dollars in profits, and have mentored and assisted other investors in rehabbing hundreds more properties. These days, the team has branched out, now flipping houses in different parts of the country and focusing on larger new-construction projects.

Detailed yet understandable-Very good for new to medium-range flippers

This is the second book I've bought written by the author (the other being his book on house flipping). It's excellent for what you might call a "serious beginner" because it's detailed, yet it's understandable and not overwhelming.

The book is in a very good format that includes narrative as well as corresponding tables for the multiple components of a house (e.g., plumbing, sheetrock, roofing) to help estimate prices, and the author always gives a good overview of what these components are for, which is a big plus for someone with not a lot of construction experience. For instance, when discussing roofs, he breaks down that there are three parts of a roof (sheathing, underlayment, shingles), and then explains the purpose of each of these parts; After the basics of "how a roof works," he explains the options for these components (i.e., for shingles can do asphalt, wood, metal, tile, etc.,) and what the corresponding price range would be for each type.

Being that all houses are different in levels of repair, labor and material costs vary by part of the country and quality of materials used, etc., it's impossible to have exact costs for each type of repair until you actually start the rehab. However, so long as you do your homework, this book gives an excellent basis for how to estimate rehab costs accurately enough so that you know what you're getting into and won't be blindsided by huge surprises.

good for home owners or flippers

I have not read the complete book but that is not necessary. Everything is indexed very well and a reader can easily go from one subject on costs to another. The subject (like heating) is well explained and the scope of work explained. Then the different aspects of the subject are considered and the cost of each given as an estimate. All one has to do is to add up the highs and lows for a gas furnace, ductwork and size of house to get a high and low estimate. I did that in a whole five to ten minutes.

Well written and very informative!

My wife and I are getting into flipping houses and we wanted to read all we could. This book was great. It was written in a way that was easy to understand and helped understand the cost of work and materials. J. Scott is great and I've got all his books. They are informative and easy to understand. I've learned a lot and would make sure to read this before getting into house flipping!

Seven Scientific Turning Points That Changed the World

From the new book, National Geographic Concise History of Science and Invention: An Illustrated Time Line



1. The World’s First City

The settlement at Çatal Hüyük in Anatolia (modern Turkey) dates from about 6000 B.C.E. at the latest. The houses butted closely together and had flat roofs, reached by means of ladders. The people grew crops and irrigated the fields. They supplemented their diet by hunting animals. They wove cloth, made baskets and clay pots, and tanned hides to make leather. Nearby volcanoes produced a hard, glasslike obsidian, which the people of Çatal Hüyük made into knives and other tools. The obsidian was also traded with neighboring peoples. Each house had a religious shrine decorated with figurines and the heads and horns of animals. The dead were left outside exposed to the elements before their remains were buried under the houses.



2. The Library at Alexandria

The greatest collection of documents in classical times was kept in a library in Alexandria, northern Egypt. The library was founded by pharaoh Ptolemy I Soter (r. 323–283 B.C.E.) at the beginning of the third century B.C.E. and built up by his son Ptolemy II Philadelphus (r. 283–46 B.C.E.). Established as part of the research “department” of the Alexandrian Museum, it had a smaller section, the Serapeum, located in the nearby Temple of Serapis that was established by Ptolemy III Euergetes (r. 246–22 B.C.E.). The hundreds of thousands of vellum and papyrus scrolls included nearly all the works of the Greek poets and dramatists, based originally on copies of the works in Aristotle’s library in Athens. The large staff included translators, editors, and scribes, who kept adding texts to the collection. Fire damaged part of the library in 269 C.E., and rioting during a civil war led to its final destruction. The Serapeum was pillaged by a Christian mob in 391.



3. Avicenna

The first European printing of the Canon of Medicine was a milestone in the development of medicine. Its author, Ibn-Sina—whose name was Latinized as “Avicenna” for publication in a field still dominated by the ideas of ancient Roman and Greek physicians—was a Persian philosopher and physician. He was born in a village near Bokhara (now Bukhara in present-day Uzbekistan). He studied there and traveled widely. He learned all the classical Arab texts and mastered astronomy, Greek, mathematics, and all the available texts on medicine. At age 18 he became a court physician, then vizier (advisor) at the Buyid court in Hamadan, and from 1024 was physician to several sultans. As well as introducing the works of Aristotle to the Islamic world, Ibn-Sina also wrote more than 100 works on science, philosophy, and religion. His pioneering medical work, however, was his most important contribution to the spread of knowledge. The Canon of Medicine, written in 1000, remained a standard medical textbook for centuries. It contains instructions for testing medications, guidelines for diagnosing disease by examining the patient, and advice to surgeons to learn anatomy from observation and dissection, rather than from textbooks.



4. Quinine

The isolation of the chemical compound quinine by French chemists Pierre Pelletier and Joseph Caventou in 1820 was a breakthrough with wide-reaching consequences in medicine and politics. Quinine is a compound found in the bark of the cinchona tree in South America. For centuries it was used by the Quechua peoples of Peru as a muscle relaxant to suppress shivering, and missionaries who saw this use brought the bark back to Europe in the 17th century, believing it would relieve the shivering associated with malarial fevers. It proved highly effective, not only stopping the shivering but also halting the advance of the disease. With the isolation of the active chemical component in 1820 quinine could be produced in large quantities and more easily administered. Tropical regions in which malaria was prevalent and therefore inhabitable to Europeans, who have no natural immunity, were now open for colonization, starting the “scramble for Africa” as European powers fought to take control of sub-Saharan Africa.



5. Safe Anesthetics

For many centuries a major impediment to safe surgical procedures was the problem of pain. The intense pain that accompanied surgery before the introduction of reliable anesthetics not only caused considerable distress to the patient, but also made the surgery more dangerous. The patient’s involuntary movements and the need to finish the surgery quickly increased the likelihood of potentially fatal mistakes. Anesthetics such as opium, cocaine, and mandrake had always been available but were not reliable: an underdose or overdose was too easily administered. Sometimes the anesthetic would be insufficient to dull pain; at other times it would kill the patient. The discovery of new anesthetics—including ether, chloroform, and nitrous oxide—in the mid-19th century improved the situation, but almost as important was the methodical research into anesthetic techniques and dosages conducted during this time. Physicians such as John Snow (1813–1858)—better known for identifying the cause of cholera—published dosage advice and designed apparatus for administering these new anesthetics safely to patients of all ages and body sizes.



6. Insulin

Produced in the pancreas by cells called the islets of Langerhans, insulin is a hormone that enables body cells to take up the blood sugar glucose. Glucose is used as an energy source by the body. If the body cannot make insulin, type I diabetes mellitus results. In 1921 Canadian physiologist Frederick Banting (1891–1941) isolated insulin from dogs and found that injecting it cured the symptoms of diabetes in a dog that had had its pancreas removed (and therefore could not produce its own insulin). Using a purer extract from calves, Banting and coworkers successfully treated terminally ill children with type I diabetes the following year. Purified animal insulin was soon available for sale. By the early 1980s insulin could be made by genetically modified bacteria containing the human insulin gene. Banting received the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1923 for his discovery.



7. Microwave Ovens

Self-taught American engineer Percy Spencer (1894–1970), who worked for the company Raytheon, had the idea for a microwave oven after noticing that a candy bar had melted while he was making a radar set in the 1940s. Raytheon patented his idea in 1947. A few cumbersome models were made, but it was not until 1967 that the first domestic microwave was marketed. Microwave ovens use microwave radiation to heat water and other polarized molecules in food. They cook quickly, efficiently, and safely. Since the late 1960s, the ovens have become smaller, more powerful, and easier to use. More than 90 percent of U.S. households now have a microwave oven.

Fascinating Book, Even For Non-Science People

This wonderfully illustrated, well-organized book may win over even the least scientifically minded. For people interested in science and invention, it provides hours of fascination. The drawings, photographs and timelines are interesting and beautiful. The writing style is lively and interesting, much more accessible than any standard science textbook. If I were teaching science to kids, I would use this book. It captivated both my 9-year-old daughter and me.

The short vignettes on each page that described a famous scientist or inventor were especially interesting. Their stories come to life as we learn personal details about them and their lives. The photography is excellent, up to the National Geographic standard of excellence. The way they put the advances in science in a timeline perspective was enlightening. Amazing coffee table book

Let me get this out of the way first, this IS NOT a book that you will just "pick up" and read...it's meant to be a coffee table book...if you're hoping to start at page 1, read through and know everything about science and invention, look for another title!!!

I haven't, obviously, read the book from cover to cover, but have poked and prodded around aimlessly and have enjoyed it thoroughly...some of the stuff is superfluous and has no bearing on our lives (does it matter when Voltaire wrote Candide? Not really, the important part is that he did), but if you're a fun fact and *useless* information kinda fan, this is for you

as i was reading, i couldn't help but think that this book would come in handy for anybody studyinng to be on jeopardy or some trivia show...i suggest doing like i am, and making a point to pick it up for 5min a day and read a passage to learn something new each day

great buy so far, would definitely recommend to any avid science or technology readers

This lovely book is a treasure trove of information in a very usable, accessible form including geographic location, time line & same page comparison with science & inventions in other areas during the same time frame. Very readable & lavishly illustrated.....a book to have as a ready reference and/or a fine gift.

Straightforward and Interesting

What I like most about this book is its readability. The tone is very engaging and makes you want to read on. The illustrations (almost all in color) are plentiful and are an invaluable accompaniment to the text.

I would agree with other reviewers that the biggest drawback to this book is its price. The price is way too high, in my opinion, particularly for a paperback book. For that kind of money, I want something sturdier, that will stand up to years of use. This is the only reason I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5.

Good geoscience book and science book in general

My only previous exposure to geology or geophysics came from books/classes about the solar system where the Earth is taken as just one example of a planet. This is the first book I've read dedicated to the subject and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

At a high level its coverage includes, the origin of the Earth, geologic time scales, the Earth's interior, the origin of the Earth's magnetic field, volcanoes, plate tectonics, how the continents have varied with time, the interaction of the oceans with land masses and past climate fluctuations.

This book actually covers a lot more material than I expected, including paleobiology and ecology (which I enjoyed reading, but sometimes found it a little too political). There is actually quite a lot of material on paleobiology. It does overlap a fair amount with one of the authors other books, 'Bringing fossils to life', but it wasn't excessive and was well done. There is an appendix with some very nice high-level cladograms.

Although this book doesn't require any particular background, it covers a lot of material and requires some effort to learn it. The authors put in some effort to actually teach the subject and the book illustrates some very interesting science. It also provides some nice illustrations of how science is done.

One nice thing about this book is that it has a lot of color photographs and drawings. That's somewhat unusual among the (non-astronomy) science books I've seen at this level. I found it made the appearance much nicer.

Overall, I liked it a lot and learned a lot from it.

Superb if it's as good as the first edition

I used the first edition of this book by Dott and Batten as an earth science major back in the early 70's, and thought it excellent. I don't know how the new edition stacks up, but the original book was as fine a piece of writing for a textbook as I had ever come across, and geology boasts better than average writers for such things. For example, there is the redoubtable Arthur Beiser, whose many books maintain both a high level of readabilty as well as scholarship.
One major change in the content of the book would no doubt be in regard to the theory of orogenesis, or mountain-building. The first book placed great emphasis on the geosynclinal theory and orthostatic rebound mechanisms. This one is sure to emphasize plate tectonics as the geosynclinal theory seems to have waned in popularity.
The original version of this text was one of the best science texts I ever used in college. If this later edition is half as good it will still be better than 90% of the others.

Thank God for this

It's difficult to find a banking hornbook that doesn't pre-date the 2008 financial crisis. This book, having been written in 2011, is definitely relevant. It was published before the OTS was shut down, though, so I had to keep remembering what functions the FDIC was going to take over, etc.
But for someone with no knowledge of banking regulation or the financial system, this book was a God-send. It had an excellent discussion of Basels I-III, and walked you through the entire timeline, from getting your charter to going into receivership. Malloy consistently references the applicable statute sections, so it's a good idea to keep your statute book handy in order to cross reference and annotate.

I am 100% glad that I purchased this, and would absolutely do it again.

About the Author
Shelley Gaskin, Series Editor for the GO! Series, is a professor of business and computer technology at Pasadena City College in Pasadena, California. She holds a master's degree in business education from Northern Illinois University and a doctorate in adult and community education from Ball State University. Dr. Gaskin has 15 years of experience in the computer industry with several Fortune 500 companies and has developed and written training materials for custom systems applications in both the public and private sector. She is also the author of books on Microsoft Outlook and word processing.

Too much fluff and not enough pith

This book is currently being used as a textbook in a computer 101 class I am teaching at my local community college. This is the second time I have taught this class using this book. First, the major pros for the text: It is spiral bound so it lays flat. Chapters are in a logical order. Each MS Office application gets three chapters. Topics are presented in project format with two projects with very detailed steps - this can be a plus or a minus depending upon your point of view. There are lots of additional projects, exercises, questions, and other pedagogical features to endear it to teachers, and this book would most likely work well for the self-learner (with some caution). The publisher provides many, many resource files for the instructor and the student.

Now, for some cons.

As mentioned, each project has a great many detailed steps and lends itself well to what I call "recipe style" learning. Meaning that if you can read, you should be able to produce the desired results. However, this is the feedback I get from the majority of my students: "I am following the steps, but I don't know why I am doing them." Clearly, the concepts are being lost! No actual learning is taking place. This becomes evident if I present a short quiz on the basic concepts presented in the project. The students are getting lost because of too many detailed steps. Most of the steps say click here, pull down that, select this, and on and on. Which leads to the next major problem with this text. Most of the focus of the project steps is on the appearance of the project: pretty printing, glitz and glitter, and lots of fluff. This is not particularly surprising since Microsoft has put emphasis on those same things since about MS Office 2003. I found the chapters on Excel to be particularly bad, and to the point where I presented my own material.

Some of the problem with these projects is also the fault of the student data files for the project. Perhaps too much of the work in setting up the project is being done. If the students had to create the project from scratch, they would be more in tune with what they are trying to accomplish. In earlier courses, I created my examples that the students created from scratch, and they focused on one concept. Then I ended with a simple project that tied the concepts together.

Finally, a few words to the self-learner: The good news is that you will not need an instructor to use this book. The steps are reasonably clear with only minor differences between the book and the actual Office application being used. The bad news is that you will need to study the project carefully in order to pull out the actual concepts that are going to be important to remember in order to use MS Office applications with any degree of expertise. My best advice is to go slowly, practice - practice - practice, and keep a notebook handy for keeping track of major concepts learned.

Felt ripped off

I thought I was buying a paperback book. (That's how its listed) But for $1.96 plus $3.95 shipping, I received a pamphlet, just a few pages long. The info was ok, but not worth nearly $6.00!!
