Amazon.com Review
The story of Don Vito Corleone, the head of a New York Mafia family, inspired some of the most successful movies ever. It is in Mario Puzo's The Godfather that Corleone first appears. As Corleone's desperate struggle to control the Mafia underworld unfolds, so does the story of his family. The novel is full of exquisitely detailed characters who, despite leading unconventional lifestyles within a notorious crime family, experience the triumphs and failures of the human condition. Filled with the requisite valor, love, and rancor of a great epic, The Godfather is the definitive gangster novel.

From Library Journal
Diehard Godfather fans play second banana to no other subculture in their obsession with the minutiae of Puzo's novel and Coppola's films. These dedicated fans will be most disappointed by the new audio version, although perhaps only an hour of material is missing, but casual aficionados will barely notice the abridgment. Missing are the subplot involving Sonny's mistress, Lucy Mancini, and Dr. William Kennedy and the descriptions of the regional Mafia chieftains that precede the commission meeting at which Don Corleone flushes out Don Barzini as his number one rival. Actor Joe Mantegna does a fine job throughout, largely resisting the temptation to put on voices for too many of the characters. However, this cannot be said for his Don Corleone. Perhaps it is vengeance: after all, Andy Garcia, as the late Don's nephew, Vincent Mancini, put the hit on Mantegna's Joey Zasa in Godfather III, but whatever the reason, Mantegna gives Corleone a raspy falsetto-imagine the Pillsbury Doughboy with a tracheotomy-that ranks as one of the worst Brando impressions ever. Also, Puzo's chilling ending in which Kay converts to Catholicism with the hope of saving her husband's soul is inexplicably transformed into a chamber-of-commerce-style bromide about the family's new life in Nevada. Still, the popularity of Puzo's novel 27 years after its publication makes this abridgment a must-have.

Time to Read this on your Kindle
By Amazon Customer
I just finished reading The Artisan: An Artistic Assassin Thrillerwhich is a great read and an excellent, satirical but non-slapstick view of Mafia Families and it made me think of how much I loved The Godfather (Signet). Even though it's been years, this book pulled me in and read as fresh and enrapturing as it did the first time.
4 reasons why you need to read it again:
1) it reads like the movie, but there are so many things in the book that are not in the movie
2) this is such a big part of American lore and legend, it feels like coming home
3) it will remind you what an amazing story teller Mario Puzo was and you will go back and read all his books such as Omerta: A Novel
4) we read to be taken away and this book will take you far, far away.

So don't say, "I already read this." say., "It's time to read The Godfather (Signet) again!"

Mario Puzo's "The Godfather" belongs to that legion of novels whose most salient quality has been misguidedly denounced as a vice: its capacity to make the artificial appear "natural." At the time of its release, the first critics viewed the novel was regarded as a roman à clef as critics attempted to identify the "real" Johnny Fontane and Don Corleone -- i.e., the people in real-life mob families who were represented by the Fontane and Coreleone characters. To do this, they and more sophisticated critics later disregarded the work's patent fictional quality. I would argue that "The Godfather" is a profoundly mediated work, an inspired bricolage that takes elements of Christian mythology, American and Italian literature, and transforms them into something irreducibly new. This means that the relationship between the work and the reality from which it takes its materials is extremely problematic. Thus, "The Godfather" is not merely an index, a symptom, or a document of its time, for it does not carry its historical materials fully formed into a new context where they remain unchanged. On the contrary, "The Godfather" has revealed itself to be deeply prophetic, because it has created new perceptions that have subtly altered our understanding of society. The tensions of the age, Puzo's and Don Corleone's, are intermingled with novelistic tensions, and together transform the matter of history.

Simply Brilliant Literature--A True Classic!
By Kiwes
They just don't write books like this anymore! Bravo~~well done! You'd think out of the many books I've read, that The Godfather would have been one of the classics to cross my eyes' path, but for some reason I had never read it. Hey, better late than never, and I have to say it lives up to everything I ever heard about the novel.

Mario was a brilliant writer and to learn how he came to write this classic is classic and somewhat shocking in and of itself. Having owed money to some loan sharks and not having a way to dig himself out of that pit, out came The Godfather. Truly amazing.

I fell in love with the Corleone family and all of its dysfunctional inner workings, but they were a family nonetheless. The characters were so vivid and alive, and the trickery that took place was masterful. I must say, there were things that even I didn't pick up on, but later figured out from the characters' guidance. Absolutely outstanding novel and truly a literary work of art. This is the type of book every writer dreams of writing. You just know there's that one good story that's going to put you over the edge, and while you wait, thank God for stories like this one.

Now I'm going to download the movie, because believe it or not, I never saw it either. I plan to read the entire series and watch the films to see how they match up. My grandma always told me to save some things for later in your life so you'd have something to look forward too, and I have to say, my grandma was right, as she usually was. I'm glad I waited to add this classic to my many books under my belt. Outstanding!
