For 40 years, Kubrick fans and film buffs have wondered about the director's mysterious unmade film on Napoleon Bonaparte. Slated for production immediately following the release of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Kubrick’s "Napoleon" was to be at once a character study and a sweeping epic, replete with grandiose battle scenes featuring thousands of extras. To write his original screenplay, Kubrick embarked on two years of intensive research; with the help of dozens of assistants and an Oxford Napoleon specialist, he amassed an unparalleled trove of research and preproduction material, including approximately 15,000 location scouting photographs and 17,000 slides of Napoleonic imagery. No stone was left unturned in Kubrick's nearly-obsessive quest to uncover every piece of information history had to offer about Napoleon. But alas, Kubrick’s movie was not destined to be: the film studios, first M.G.M. and then United Artists, decided such an undertaking was too risky at a time when historical epics were out of fashion.

TASCHEN’s tribute to this unmade masterpiece makes Kubrick’s valiant work on "Napoleon" available to fans for the first time. Based on the original 2009 limited edition which featured ten books hidden inside of a carved out reproduction of a Napoleon history book, this publication brings all the original elements together in one volume. Herein, all of the books from the original edition are reproduced in facsimile: correspondence, costume studies, location scouting photographs, research material, script drafts, and more. Kubrick’s final draft is reproduced in its entirety.

The text book features the complete original treatment, essays examining the screenplay in historical and dramatic contexts, an essay by Jean Tulard on Napoleon in cinema, and a transcript of interviews Kubrick conducted with Oxford professor Felix Markham. A rather insane volume containing a great story

Ten books inside this massive green behemoth tell and illustrate the story of how Kubrick attempted to make this period epic for MGM right after 2001: A Space Odyssey. But a cash crunch in Hollywood at the end of the 60's, 2001's not-blockbuster numbers, and a flop from DiLaurentis called Waterlloo convinced MGM to pull out. The production was shelved, stored by Kubrick on his farm, where it sat until recently. Finally his estate has decided to revive this treasure trove of research, scriptwriting, costume planning and location scouting to a small monument of books filled with terrific historical text, photos of archived notes and correspondence, photographs, production details and techniques, and the final script. It's a movie in a box, waiting to be made. Serious, scholarly discussion of the subjects complement an embarrassment of photographic riches to fill up this beautiful, one of a kind volume for serious study of the process of independent film production. The product design of this monster is one-of-a-kind. It's worth every penny.

Extraordinary

I'm a Kubrick nut. If you're also a Kubrick nut, you will find NAPOLEON endlessly fascinating -- the literary equivalent of an ten-course meal at a five-star restaurant at the best restaurant you could ever possibly formulate in your imagination. Despite its cost, this publication does not disappoint. And what's fascinating to me is that -- despite NAPOLEON's comprehensiveness, from a "macro" standpoint -- a studious reader garners true, unbridled insight into the quotidian methodology of Kubrick's wholly astringent sensibility. This is thanks to the exhaustively collected (and beautifully reproduced) letters and memos (both from and to Stanley) and -- even more significantly -- the "hand-written annotations" that appear, throughout the material, in Kubrick's own hand. Particularly given the time-frame during which the bulk of this material was created -- in the immediate aftermath, for the most part, of 2001 -- it's fascinating to witness the means by which Stanley was leveraging his success (to ostensibly actuate his dream project), and the extent to which his reach occasionally (and ultimately) exceeded his grasp. Kubrick's insight into the workings of the Hollywood studio system is also on evidence; viz., there's a full draft of the NAPOLEON screenplay included, but the script's (somewhat schematic) side-stepping of the contemplated scope of the more ambitiously contemplated battlefield-centric production sequences (for example : Wellington appears, in the climactic clash, but has nary a line of dialogue) subtly suggests Kubrick's savvy insofar as making the project as financially palatable as possible to Hollywood's powers-that-be. As mentioned by other reviewers, the ancillary "costuming," "production design," and other magnificently-reproduced photographic volumes add immesurably to the experience. I spent a full weekend plumbing this thing, and it was a weekend well spent (and one I look forward to undertaking again, at some point in the future) (as with future viewings of Kubrick's masterpieces).

Not Designed for Stanley

In this book one can pore over Stanley Kubrick's personal correspondences as well as the screenplay, saying nothing of the 100's of photos. The content is incredible.

Stanley Kubrick's passion for research, beauty, and functional organization is no secret. It is ironic and unfortunate, that this book was incredibly well researched, meticulous in what was put in (and left out), well organized, but was printed in an odd format, in a way that stifles clear communication of the book's own content. It was not formatted for function, but for concept.

The volume is over 1000 pages yet uses a distinctly vertical format to feel like a book from the Napoleon era. The pages curl tremendously towards the center, and the text documents within the book fan out from the binding of the book, for that feel of actually looking through originals. Unfortunately, the information close to the center of the book becomes so curved due to the book's size that the reader has to angle their head or move the book to read (particularly around page 500). The hundreds of sequential photos do not read well across a vertical format; they are just over an inch wide and unclear. Often these images are of etchings from napoleons era, an art form whose beauty resides in the details.

I get the conceptual appeal of the book format. It looks nice on my coffee table. It just needed to be a much bigger book to feel clear, or in another format to properly use.

Instead of focusing on the type of BOOK that was produced in the napoleonic era, it would have been much more pleasurable for the reader, to design the format of the book around the FILM Stanley Kubrick designed. Stanley wasn't going to film Napoleon in the common aspect-ratio of prints and paintings from the Napoleonic era. He was going to film it in the clearest way possible to show us the Napoleonic era itself. Sweeping vistas of armies, their patterns of war, and the european countryside might have been just as central a tenet to this film as Napoleon himself. Despite having excellent content, Castle's take on Napoleon doesn't give us enough room to properly enjoy it.

This book changed everything: the way I see my mother and her struggles, the way being left along can affect a young person, and overall the aspect of overcoming a struggle. Reyna Grande is extremely vivd and gives specific detail as to her life in this book. Every single chapter I read felt like I was there; I was in the same spot as her (which at some points I have been). It's given me the chance to truly open my eyes, because unlike her, I have the title of American on my name, and that title gives me so much privilege. I can go on and on as to why evert single school in California should read this. congress men/women should read this to understand what immigrants really go through. This book has also inspired me to keep on reading more and more, as well as continue my higher education.

reading this book was like looking into her soul

I live in New Mexico. i seen the flight of Mexican immigrants for years. reading this book was like looking into her soul. I felt a sadness just knowing the life she had to endure and how she was put down at a young age simply because her parents were in the states. it was sad,and she and her siblings were strong and stood by each other with courage and conviction, I highly recommend this to all. it's an amazingly true and honest memoir. I truly believe we as a nation are missing out on an opportunity to legally bring these immigrants to the states to work and earn an honest living. Way to go Reyna your book was Awesome. I can't wait to hear you speak and I hope to meet you at San Juan college on the 29th of September.

The book comes with a great amount of example code

KnockoutJS Blueprints is an advanced-level book on the front-end library KnockoutJS (KO). It assumes some familiarity with the library but contains a detailed explanation of KO core concepts in the first chapter. The book focuses on Single Page Applications.

The chapters (five total) are presented as a series of projects that make use of different KO features and integrate it with other libraries. The first chapter deals with the main KO features and serves as a quick introduction. The second chapter describes advanced built-in features such as templates and components and also gives examples how to integrate KO with other libraries through custom binding handlers. The third chapter describes a project using DurandalJS, a framework based on KO that adds missing features, such as routing. The fourth chapter builds a PhoneGap application by combining KO with jQuery-Mobile. The fifth shows how to make a Single Page Application crawlable by search engine bots.

The book comes with a great amount of example code. The code is thoroughly documented and is written in the OOP style which can be either an advantage or disadvantage depending on the code style preferences of the reader. The code modules are defined using the AMD style with Require.js. Other alternatives, such as CommonJS and Browserify or Webpack are not mentioned although the example projects could be adopted to use CommonJS modules.

I recommend the book for front-end/full-stack developers who regularly use KnockoutJS in their work. The book is very practical and contains many useful examples of integrating KO with other front-end libraries in web applications.

Beyond the MBA Hype

As someone who is not looking to do an MBA, and therefore does not fall within the intended audience, this book was a great read. Sameer, the author, has made an attempt to cater specifically to the needs of prospective MBA applicants from India.

A few great points about this book are:
1. Sameer has a distinctive lucid and free-flowing style of writing that causes the reader to feel as if he is sitting right across the table, having a conversation. Difficult topics such as "career change", "skills gap" and "networking" have been simplified to a level that everyone would be able to comprehend.
2. It offers a holistic view of the entire MBA experience - from pre-MBA insecurities ("Do I really need an MBA?") to post-MBA recruitment.
3. A thought ringing through the entire book, which the author drives the reader to delve deeper into, is to (re)evaluate whether an MBA would be a step in the right direction - something that most books written along similar lines don't do well. This is one of the great strengths of this book.
4. The story of two fictional characters - Sachin and Mitu - representing the two extreme ends of the Indian social spectrum, serves as an outline to which all topics in the book are aligned. Readers would be able to immediately relate and connect with either of the two, which gives a human feel to an otherwise seemingly dry collection of topics.
5. The book is peppered with witty and humorous comments that make it a pleasant read.
6. The length - 172 pages - makes it ideal to be finished in a couple of sittings.

A few areas in which the book is a little lacking:
1. A lot of Indian (Hindi) words have been used all through. Though it is geared mainly towards Indian applicants, for those of us that might not be familiar with such terms, a short appendix with explanations would have been helpful.
2. Except for in the Appendices, the author has not shared any personal stories all through the book. This was probably to ensure non-biasedness of thoughts. However, sharing some personal stories (for example, on "career change", which the author successfully made) would have made it more interesting.
3. A large number of topics are covered - probably too many for 172 pages. Therefore, every topic is no more than a summary. This being by design, though it provides an overview of a number of topics, leaves it a little thin on details. Maybe the author intends to take up some of these topics in greater detail in his next book(s).
4. Links in footnotes could have been edited and made shorter. Some have browsing history embedded in them.

All in all, this is a great book that is highly recommended for every MBA aspirant from India.

There are many books, websites and consultants that charge an arm and leg to "get you into" business schools, but very few that will give you a peek into life after an MBA - something that every aspiring MBA aiming for a top international business school MUST factor in his/ her preparation. `Beyond the MBA Hype' is one such resourceful guide for anyone contemplating going in for an ambitious MBA program.
While it would be a great read for anyone sitting on the fence regarding the decision to go in for an MBA, it is certainly not an overstatement to say that every aspiring applicant should include this book as a part of his or her preparation. An MBA is an investment in yourself - and a rather expensive one. With a significant amount of resources that a candidate commits to over a period of 1-2 years, it is only common sense to understand what to expect going in. This book gives a great ringside overview, right from the application process, most sought after post-MBA career paths, networking, in-class instructional delivery models and a few MBA clichés 
I am completing my MBA from Columbia Business School and would definitely recommend that incorporating insights from this book into the MBA application is advisable to come across as an informed applicant.
There are more than a few dozen books flooding the MBA application market, but this one stands out for Kamat's witty narrative, breadth and depth of content and an ability to connect with and address just about any question that an MBA applicant has on their mind but gets answers to only after setting foot on campus - which can be a costly proposition.

Will save you a bundle if you take the time to read

I completed an MBA from a relatively high ranked business school 10 years ago and all I can say is that my life would certainly have been easier if I'd had access to a book like this at that point in time.

This book (which I received as a review copy) packs style, personality and humor with an abundant dose of useful information. Throughout the book, the author displays an easy going sense of humor. For example he makes a statement that the top talent from India that can't get into the IIMs (India's top B Schools) settles for Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, and the rest of the top programs globally. And for the earlier reviewer who said that he (she?) did not like the mix of Hindi in the book ... actually it's called Hinglish (Hindi + English) and is very well understood by most Indians. Adding an appendix of those terms would be like trying to explain a joke.

The book features real life stories which give the prospective applicant an idea of what to expect before, during and beyond the MBA. There are also fascinating facts and statistics that one can glean from reading this book. Case in point - did you know that only 19,000 Indians took the GMAT while 200,000 Indians took the CAT (the test that you write to get into Indian business schools)?

This book will help you avoid mismatched expectations and navigate through the maze of consultants, MBA coaching programs, admission essays and standardized testing. It could save you a bundle of money by helping you to select the right school and focus your efforts in the right direction.

The book also gives you a head start over your peers by giving you a preview of MBA courses, how MBA class teams really work, what they teach and what they can't teach (common sense, practicality, creativity and foresight.) You get a glimpse of how networking really works and how to land an internship.

For me the best part of the book is where the author describes a day in his life when he was an MBA student at Cambridge. It made me wish for my student days all over again!

A must read if you are an Indian b-school aspirant.
