Bruiser, by Neal Shusterman

New York Times bestselling author Neal Shusterman delivers a suspenseful and thrilling novel that's perfect for fans of Unwind and UnWholly.

Tennyson is not surprised, really, when his family begins to fall apart, or when his twin sister, Brontë, starts dating the misunderstood bully, Brewster (or The Bruiser, as the entire high school calls him). Tennyson is determined to get to the bottom of The Bruiser's reputation, even if it means gearing up for a fight. Brontë, on the other hand, thinks there's something special underneath that tough exterior. And she's right…but neither she nor Tennyson is prepared for the truth of what lies below the surface. Told through Tennyson, Brontë, and Bruiser's points of view, this dark, twisting novel explores friendship, family, and the sacrifices we make for the people we love.

Bruiser was named to the Texas Lone Star Reading List, among many other state lists, and was selected as a Book Page Top Ten Book of the Year, a Bank Street College of Education Best Book of the Year, and a Cooperative Children's Book Center Choice.

From School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up–Tennyson, 16, is a hulking loner who seems to possess the power to heal both physical and psychic hurts. When his twin sister, Brontë, befriends their shy and withdrawn classmate Brewster “Bruiser” Rawlins, he is concerned that her relationship with this boy from the wrong side of the tracks will prove somehow dangerous. After he spies Bruiser changing in the locker room and notices that his back is covered in scars and welts, he becomes even more certain that the teen and his family are bad news. In spite of her brother's warnings, Brontë continues her relationship with Bruiser, drawing him closer to her family–and Tennyson–in the process. The twins begin to notice Bruiser's unusual talent: not only can he assume the physical pain and wounds of those he cares about, but he can also absorb their anger, hurt, and grief. Told from the three characters' alternating perspectives, with Brewster's rendered in poetic form, Shusterman's novel reveals its secrets and their implications slowly, allowing readers to connect the dots before the characters do and encouraging them to weigh the price of Bruiser's “gift” against the freedom from pain that Tennyson and Brontë enjoy.Amy S. From Booklist
Is it possible to experience joy if you don’t experience pain? Is absorbing someone’s pain a gift or a curse? Shusterman explores these central questions in this thought-provoking new book. Sixteen-year-old Tennyson fumes when he learns his twin sister, Bronte, is dating Bruiser, the guy voted Most Likely to Go to Jail, but Bronte insists Bruiser is misunderstood. Tennyson is eventually won over and befriends Bruiser, and that’s when the twins notice something odd. Their cuts and bruises disappear overnight while Bruiser is a mass of new hurts; somehow he takes on the pain, both physical and emotional, of the people he cares for. The story is narrated by Tennyson, Bronte, and Cody, Bruiser’s brother, in prose and by Bruiser in free verse, and the individual voices are nicely distinct. It is Tennyson, though, who stands out as he evolves from self-centered bully to caring young man and ponders big questions about friendship and sacrifice. A culminating crisis is a bit convenient, but the compelling issues and engaging premise make this a rewarding read. Grades 8-12. --Lynn Rutan

Review
“The compelling issues and engaging premise make this a rewarding read.” (ALA Booklist)

“This is a wrenching but ultimately redemptive look at how pain defines us and how love, whether familial, romantic or friendly, demands sacrifice and brings gifts of its own. Once again, Shusterman spins a fantastic tale that sheds light on everyday life.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“This eloquent and thoughtful story will most certainly leave its mark.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)

“Even as the narrative wrestles with philosophical and moral issues, it delves deep into the viewpoints of Tennyson, Bronte, Bruiser, and his younger brother, each segment told in a different, distinctive style, making for a memorable story.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Shusterman’s writing is wonderful and a joy to read. The subject matter makes this a great book discussion choice.” (Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA))

“Shusterman’s novel reveals its secrets and their implications slowly, allowing readers to connect the dots before the characters do and encouraging them to weigh the price of Bruiser’s ‘gift’ against the freedom from pain that Tennyson and Bronte enjoy.” (School Library Journal)

Bruised, broken, down but not out
By Cheryl Stout
Neal Shusterman really has a knack for writing Young Adult books that resonate with a much wider audience. I started reading "Bruiser" thinking I knew what the plot was going to be - I was WRONG. I hadn't read any of the promo materials and so had no idea and am glad that it happened that way. I was able to enjoy the twists and turns of the story because of that.

I really enjoyed that the book was written in four voices and that one of the voices was done totally in poetry. Shusterman just keeps surprising me with the high calibre of his writing. Unwind was one of my favorite all-time books. But guess what? This one is right up there, too.

Shusterman's books make you think. They make you question the world and how it operates. But they do it in an exceptionally readable manner.

CAUTION:
I would recommend this for older teens or adults. Some language, sexual situations, violence.

A wonderful, compelling read
By J.Prather
Much like Shusterman's Unwind, Bruiser is a well written story peopled with engagaging characters that will make you think, and will stay with you long after you finish the last page. The author's incredible gift with dialogue, his expert pacing and his ability to blend in totally impossible concepts and make them believable is truly extraordinary. I admire people who exude an air of being comfortable in their own skin, and it's this that I think of when I read this book. The author is just so comfortable in his own storytelling, that there are no dialogue blips, no blatantly obvious plot devices, and no clunky transitions. This tale moves along seamlessly and the reader is left with a story that is stunningly authentic.

The narrative is presented from the differing points of view of brother and sister Tennyson and Bronte, Brew, and his younger brother Cody. If I have one issue with the book, it's that these characters come across as older than their years. They are not even 16, but come across as much older teens. The prose is very well written, and the transitions between points of view are done expertly. It's Brew's point of view, written in free verse, that truly contains the power of this story. I am not a fan of free verse. I steer clear of it whenever possible, but here it so effectively gives Brew his own unique voice that I was riveted. His verse is full of pain, anger and joy. His ruminations on the nature of pain and his abilities to absorb the pain (both emotional and physical) of others are very poignant.

Each character goes through his own journey in this novel, and you don't always like them. They do make you feel, and that seems to be the whole point of this story. What good are the ups if you can't feel the downs? This is a very good book that could very well be the author's best yet. There are no language issues, no sexual situations, but some violence and lots of intense emotion. This is a book to savor for both teens and adults.

Sickening.
By Claire
Definitely not for sensitive teens. The poor main character, Brewster, had the life from hell. I don't even want to talk about the sad plot. I may be addicted to happy endings, but this story made me more angry than sad. What was the author thinking? That this would be enjoyable reading? When I got to the end, I would have thrown it in the trash--something I never never do to a book--but it was on my Kindle, so I just deleted it. It's not that the writing was bad, it wasn't. The story was just sick.

Sorry, Neal Shusterman, I don't think I'll want to read any more of your books.

Good book
By sa3rao
The title reminded me of Nehru's letters to Indira. Those were turbulent times and the letters reflected those times. This lot of letters are from hard working, successful parents to their daughters-in a more previledged and secure setting. On it's own, the book is good-but the title forces a comparison with Nehru's letters, which are in a different league. A bit unfair to todays daddy's perhaps!

What is for sure is that you'll be bursting with knowledge that will stick in your mind and impress your friends for ever.

Learn by doing
By Josh Vogel
I think this book is best purchased after you buy some other books about memory training. Dominic O'Brien has a number of excellent ones out there (just to pick one of my favorites, there are plenty of others) as does Fiona McPherson. Having a background in how mnemonic techniques work, and the variety of techniques available is useful because this book doesn't really explain too much about how the stuff works, but rather jumps right in to having you learn via the "Journey method".

It's a great example of how to use some Mnemonic techniques "in action" and you will probably remember a great deal of the things you are trying to remember after the first reading of this. If you apply this method to other things, you will probably find it very effective, as I do. Ed Cooke does a great job of making something that I would never other wise learn seem very interesting and fun to memorize.

Nice work!

This book has a wonderful way to remember things. I have learned more about history in a week than I have in many years. The thing is it sticks to you like super glue lol. If you want specific memory techniques go with Dominic obrien, but this is an excellent choice to help you breakthrough creativity of the mind, it gives that push you need. Happy reading and enjoy.

Fagan has a simple mission: escort the haughty Lady Grace back to England. But nothing is ever easy. The sharp-tongued woman needles him at every turn. But when a menacing threat follows them on their journey, Fagan's grudging tolerance for Grace turns to respect . . . and into a perilous attraction that could seal their fate.

I am not finished yet with the book, but I love it. Its different from most of the other highlander books that I've read. The plot is different and characters are a bit different. I recommend that everyone that loves to read about this period of time in Scotland and England to read these books of Victoria Roberts as they are really excellent reading.

Great fun!
By Booklover
Great fun!! Light repartee between main characters; well-written dialogue and enough description to feel like you were actually in the Highlands. Some authors just don't give you much setting, but Roberts does a good job.

Learn Anything And Everything. Starting Now.
Install Knowledge Into Your Brain Using The Very Same Memory Technique Used By The World's Top Memorizers.

  • What if you were suddenly granted the ability to download and install vast sums of knowledge into your brain...

  • What would you learn if you discovered your memory bank wasn't a tiny cupboard but was in fact an enormous warehouse?

  • What would you learn if you could cram your mind full of facts and figures?

  • How many people could you impress with your encyclopaedic knowledge of a subject they assume you know nothing about?

  • Are you studying for an exam and want a better way to remember important information?

Starting here, with the list of Shakespeare's 37 plays (in chronological order of course), and the novels of Charles Dickens, you will learn how to commit endless amounts of data to memory. Half an hour from the instant you start reading this book you will be able to recite, forwards and backwards, the titles of all of Shakespeare's plays... BUT THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING.

Through actual demonstration, you will have mastery of a technique that will allow you to do this with any topic of your choosing.

The Memory Grand Masters
The Memory Palace technique of memorizing is at least 2500 years old and relies solely on utilising your brain's natural strengths. Also known as the Journey Method, or the Method of Loci, the Memory Palace technique is used by every top memorizer in the world.

Inspired by the teachings of top memorizers, 'The Memory Palace' is your introduction and practical guide to storing and retrieving anything in that beautiful head of yours.

EXTRACT from "The Memory Palace - Learn Anything And Everything"
"Do you know all of Charles Dickens' novels? Do you know all of Shakespeare's plays? Do you know the world's longest rivers? The most-populated countries? Can you name every President the United States has ever had? Can you list the entire British Monarchy all the way back in time to 757AD? Can you reel off the geological time periods? Can you name every 'Best Picture' Oscar Winning Movie since 1928? Can you reproduce the Periodic Table of Elements if asked to do so?

If not, why not?

Well, probably because you haven't fed the information into your brain in a way it can remember.

Instead of having memories "in there somewhere", with everything in your head swirling around like a shaken cocktail, you will have an organised library of information. Learning in this way means when you come to recall something, you go to exactly where that memory is stored inside your head. You can even look around at the related memories.

A Memory Palace makes memories accessible, clear, vivid, and most importantly, unforgettable."

"[...] discover a better (more fun) way of retaining data." - Tiffany Rae

"Smile's writing style is entertaining and engaging, he illuminates a dry subject to produce an entertaining and captivating read. Highly recommended for those interested in memory improvement techniques." - Daniel Knocks

It works, but ....
By Evelyn Uyemura
See warning at the end of the review!

First of all, I borrowed this for free through Amazon Prime, after reading Moonwalking with Einstein. That book showed that an average person can memorize (which is not quite the same thing as remember) a surprising amount of material, through a specific technique called the Memory Palace. I had heard about this method before, and gave it a half-hearted try, but like many people, I felt that it was too much trouble--learning a bunch of random stuff in order to learn the actual target material seemed like twice as much work.

But even half-hearted attempts seemed to work, at least for a while.

And after reading the Moonwalking book, I figured, why not? I'm 61 years old, my Dad just died of Alzheimer's this year, anything that can give my brain a workout is worth a try.

The plus of this book is that instead of explaining the memory palace technique, it just jumps right in and demonstrates it. It does all the imaginative work of walking you through a scenario with the crazy associations elaborated for you in print. And if you pay attention, form clear mental images as you go, and have a few functioning brain cells, it should take.

What I found is that after one reading, I did *not* have all 37 of Shakespeare's plays committed to memory. But what went wrong was very illuminating, because the ones I screwed up were the ones that I didn't really put in a specific enough location in the first place. The parts that I imagined clearly were firmly imprinted. The ones where I went, "Ok, corner of my street, wait, no, maybe the next street would be better, um, ok, let's say the house next door..."--those slipped away. But the corner of my bedroom, the door to the bathroom, the front porch, in front of the movie theatre, those were as clear as a bell.

So I see that indeed, this system will allow me, with some practice, and mostly, with clear image-making (imagining) in the first place, to memorize lists of various things.

I must admit that I am an English major and college English teacher, and I couldn't have told you even how many plays Shakespeare wrote, much less which one was first, or last, or how many of those damn Henrys he wrote. And now I can. (Also, Dickens wrote a couple of books I've never heard of.)

I was on Jeopardy about 7 years ago, and I tried to learn all the presidents, using another method, but I never got them all in place. Now I think I will finally, with some time and effort, get my presidents straight.

So yeah, the book is short, there are a couple of grammatical oddities, but it's worth $3.99 for sure if you're interested in using this method to memorize things.

EDIT: WARNING! Do not memorize the list of presidents given here! John Tyler and James K. Polk are missing! (They belong between Wm. H. Harrison and Zachary Taylor). Maybe the author's memory failed him? Maybe he really does need an editor? Now I wonder if the list of Shakespeare plays that I have memorized is actually correct! (Gotta remove one star for this error.)

A Real Bargain!
By Gary L
Don't pay attention to any negative reviews...This book has great value for a very small price. You will learn a valuable skill that you can use for the rest of your life. I picked up the book and in less than an hour I was able to memorize sll 37 of the Shakespeare play titles and all 20 of the Dickens novels...in order! 48 hours later, and I can still do it.

This is the same method used by world memory champions. After you finish this book, check out Dominic O'Brien's "You Can Have an Amazing Menory." The two books go real well togeher. After I learned the "journey" method that's taught in both of these books, I was actually able to memorize the sequence of a shuffled deck of card - something I never thought I'd be able to do. And it was incredibly easy. I memorized the sequence about 4-5 day ago, and today I recalled the entire sequence without a mistake. Now the sky's the limit. I'm anxious to see what else I can do. When was the last time you paid less than $3 for soemthing that gives you value for the rest of your life?...That's why I titled this review "A Real Bargain!"

I had heard of this technique in a psychology class I took a few years ago, but disregarded it because it seemed childish. After reading this book, I feel like a complete idiot for not paying more attention to what could become the key many future successes. The author took me on a hilarious journey that resulted in my learning a series of plays and books that will never be forgotten. Not ever. I will be recommending this book to anyone who will listen. I might even shout it from the mountains, of which I now know the tallest ten in order of height. Many thanks to the author for this amazing tool.

Ultimate Questions: Thinking about Philosophy (3rd Edition), by Nils Ch. Rauhut

This inexpensive and brief text examines the main problems in contemporary philosophy and uses more than 100 “Food for Thought” exercises to promote critical thinking and help students become active learners of philosophy. The book is intended for use by professors teaching a problems-oriented course, but is structured to appeal to any reader willing to explore subjects such as free will, personal identity, existence of God, and more.

Ultimate Questions explores how the timeless problems of Western philosophy are located inside our ordinary ways of thinking and being.  It encourages readers to think about philosophy first-hand by using vivid and engaging examples.  It also introduces readers to prominent up-to-date theories being applied to the same problems encountered by contemporary analytic philosophers.  After reading this text, students will gain a better sense of how mysterious their own natures really are.

II. Author Letter

Dear Colleague,

I have taught Introduction to Philosophy in various class sizes and at various academic institutions for more than fifteen years. I enjoy it tremendously but I also know that teaching the course is challenging.

A genuine introduction to philosophy requires a conversation between us, the students, and the content. However, students are often reluctant to engage in genuine conversations about great ideas. Why think, argue, or speak in class if listening to lectures seems so much more convenient? My textbook, Ultimate Questions: Thinking about Philosophy 3e, is constructed to get students actively engaged in doing philosophy together with you in the classroom. More than 100 Food for Thought Exercises in the text are designed to generate lively classroom discussions and sharpen critical thinking. The exercises are designed to make the philosophy classroom more interactive and they help students realize whether they have grasped important concepts clearly.

My text does not presuppose that students already have a natural curiosity to think and talk about great philosophical questions. Instead, it is designed to awaken such curiosity by showing them how the great questions arise naturally in our ordinary ways of being. The book is an invitation for students to realize that the great questions of philosophy are invariably intertwined with the way all of us live every day. To study the great questions then, is ultimately an attempt to get to know ourselves.

Students read much less than we instructors hope. I have tried to write Ultimate Questions such that students are seduced into reading. I have tried to write clearly without oversimplifying any philosophical position or problem. My hope is that the book can provide for students partly what a lecture normally provides, so that instructors have more freedom to use class time for discussions, group work, role play or any other form of active learning.

I would be delighted to hear from anyone using this book in their classes, and would especially value any suggestions for improvement, my e-mail is nrauhut@coastal.edu.

Sincerely,

Satisfactory Introduction in Some Respects
By David Milliern
I’ve really had a difficult time finding decent books to use in teaching my introductory philosophy courses. Given all the approaches one could take to a first introduction to philosophy, e.g., historical, secondary-literary synopsis, excerpts of works on big issues, and a survey of the most important texts in philosophy, I think Rauhut’s books are some of the better ones I’ve found. In the way that I just phrased that last remark I hope it is clear that I have reservations. Let me say what’s good about this book, first, then I’ll remark on a few of its shortcomings.

One of the things this book has going for it is that Rauhut covered some of the big issues in philosophy, and has a correlated text with excerpts from all the best papers pertaining to the subject. That is, the individual topics in this book, which constitute its chapters’ focuses (e.g., morality, the god question, the basic question of epistemology, namely, how can we know anything, etc.) has a sort of companion text (“Readings on the Ultimate Questions: An Introduction to Philosophy”), in which the chapter are filled with portions of text written by great philosophers in history, as well as contemporary scholars in philosophy departments, sometimes referred to as “philosophers.” Taken together, the potency of this text (and the other one, too), “Ultimate Questions” triple their value.

This text is clearly written and reasonably well thought out. One of the things it does more, which I think other texts need to do, is include diagrams, such as flow diagrams. Being a secondary text, whose function is, primarily, to explain the big issues in a somewhat thorough, yet quick way, requires a great deal of organization. I think this book achieves this with its setup and clear communication. The most valuable part of this book is, without a question, the part that finds no correlating chapter in the “Readings on the Ultimate Questions,” namely, the chapter on “philosophical tools.” I cannot express how much I would have liked to have known of and had access to this chapter when I taught from the “Readings” text. Most students come into a philosophy class without the slightest clue about what reason is, what constitutes an argument, and how to evaluate an argument –an unfortunate consequence of the American K-12 system and its obsession with standards, process, and memorization, rather than understanding. Even if Rauhut doesn’t do as thoroughgoing of a job as I’d like, the content contained is basically priceless and lifts a great burden from both teacher and student (or layperson) when it comes to trying to gain some traction in the area of reason and other philosophical tools (e.g., methods of inquiry).

The bad in this book is really the bad that exists in the “Readings”: what was chosen as subjects aren’t really the most important subjects in philosophy. They may be some of the more approachable and more interesting, depending on your background. In some places, Rauhut certainly tries to tie in important issues. For example, there is no chapter on metaphysics or, say, metaphysical monism versus dualism; but Rauhut does draw Descsrtes’ dualism into a chapter on the nature of personal identity. In essence, the issue I have with this text and the other is that the reader could come away from the text, having read it fairly carefully, and come away not knowing what metaphysics is. Another example: not really having said anything about philosophy’s relation to science is a deficiency. Finally, I don’t like that there is much in the way of historical reference to the development of the ideas presented; the history informs us well of philosophical developments, how they developed, why, and what motivating/influential forces were in play. There are some portion of philosophical history (e.g., medieval) and major branches of philosophy (e.g., aesthetics) that aren’t even covered, maybe not even mentioned! This is not to say that other texts are as comprehensive as I’d like –in fact, I have not found a completely satisfactory text, but merely that this is as good as the best I’ve found so far, and certainly sufficient in many respects.

If you want a big-issues approach in an introduction to philosophy, I can recommend reading this book and its companion, “Readings on the Ultimate Questions.” If you want some of the more important issues in philosophy, I can make some recommendations, including Bertrand Russell’s “The Problems of Philosophy,” for one. If you want a historical approach, Enoch Stumpf’s text is very readable and gentle.

Excellent!

This is possibly one of the best books for teaching beginning philosophy. Although the author is slightly biased in some sections, he offers clear paths of inquiry without supplying packaged, ready-made answers.

This is a book for those with some background in philosophy and especially teachers of high school or beginning philosophy for lesson ideas. I have used this book many times with great success and have shared it with colleagues and students.

It could also be titles,"Philosophy about Thinking."

Really Accessible Philosophy Textbook
By kelly a levan
Most textbook authors, probably trying to sound smart, make their subjects seem boring and academic. But this one is very readable, well-organized, and full of provocative questions and examples from the author's own life. Can we prove that we have persistent self-identities? Can we prove God exists or doesn't exist? This is challenging stuff, but the book reads very easily.
