Barbara Robinson has written several popular books for children, including My Brother Louis Measures Worms, The Best School Year Ever, The Best Halloween Ever, and the enormously popular bestselling novel The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, first published in 1972, which was made into a classic TV movie and on which this book was based. The play The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is produced annually in theaters, schools, and churches all over the world. Ms. Robinson has two daughters and three grandchildren.

This book is an annual read for me. I love the way the story brings out the humanism of the Savior's birth. It reminds me that His birth wasn't the sanitary and immaculately unrealistic birth we seem to imagine. Joseph and Mary were real people with real feelings and they lived in the real world. The stable would not have been clean and had an abundance of fresh clean straw. Not with the crowds of people and animals that were there to be taxed. Barbara Robinson did a wonderful job of bringing out the reality of the conditions surrounding the Savior's birth through her insight that is so beautifully woven into this book. It will remain on my annual list of books to read at Christmas time for as long as I can continue to read, and after that I hope to be able to listen to it from a recording of some sort. I highly recommend this book to everyone that is searching for a story that will bring out the true meaning of Christmas.

If you know anything at all about how things are usually done in churches, you'll howl over this.

This book has been out for years and I still reread it every few years. It's told from the prospective of a young girl, about 10 or 12 years old. Her church has a busybody who runs everything. When the woman gets hurt, they farm out all the things she's got going (the Potluck Supper, etc) to various other ladies. The mother of the girl who's telling the story gets stuck with the Christmas Pageant. Things are going as usual until the Herdmans show up. The Herdmans are the worst kids in the whole history of the world. Things go downhill from there, with hilarious results. But, in the end, everyone is shown a deeper meaning to the Christmas Story; one that they had forgotten in the bustle of busyness. It makes a good book to read and it also makes a good movie to watch. The movie stars Loretta Swit (of M*A*S*H) who plays the part of the woman forced to run a Christmas Pageant perfectly. Both book and movie are classics and old favorites in my family.

Do you like stories that are one of a kind special

Are you a family person. Do you like stories that are one of a kind special. If so then this story is one you need to have in your collection. The Herdmans are your typical terror in the town. This story show what happens when they finally understand what Christmas is all about. This classic story will have your kids asking for you to read it all over again. My family loves the pictures and descriptions of the charioteers. For example Alice Windalkin is described as being so clean in body and spirit she had detergent clean hands by the time she was two. I hope your family will love this book as much as mine.

In lyrical, flowing prose, this absorbing autobiography interweaves politics, family relations and romance as it chronicles an extraordinary woman's struggle to free herself from traditional Chinese society. Born into a conventional family, Xie Bingying (1906-2000) was expected to be an obedient daughter and, later, daughter-in-law. A girl's education was largely restricted to learning how to spin cotton and embroider. Xie's reading was limited to such books as Teach Your Daughter Traditional Rules. Her fate was to be determined by her parents and a matchmaker. From an early age, Xie rebelled against these circumstances. Despite her mother's scolding, she dared to venture outside to play with the boys, and she fought fiercely against having her feet bound. In this chronicle of the first 32 years of her life, gracefully translated by her daughter and son-in-law, Xie recounts her efforts to secure an education, escape from an arranged marriage, raise an infant while a single mother and, chiefly, forge political change in China as a soldier in the National Revolutionary Army fighting the warlords who dominated much of China in the 1920s, and against the Japanese in the 1930s. Drawn to the bohemian life, Xie scoffed at financial and physical security, and gloried in her image as a "warrior who opposes all feudal rule," even when her choices summoned hunger, loneliness and imprisonment. The happiest day of her early life, she recalls, was the day in 1928 when her War Diary was published. She went on to become a noted author of novels, other autobiographical works and essays. The efforts of women to emancipate themselves from restrictive social and family bonds is one of the central themes of modern Chinese history. A high degree of grit, intelligence, perseverance, and luck was required to succeed, particularly in the early decades of the 20th century. Xie Bingying had all those qualities in spades. Like a rocket escaping the pull of gravity, she hurtled from the remote village in central China where she was born in 1906 to a bohemian existence in urban China and eventually to a successful career as a teacher, essayist, novelist, and social activist. In 1927, she became a soldier in the Nationalist Army during its famous Northern Expedition. Her vivid and emotionally charged memoir, covering the first third of her life, was first published in China 60 years ago and is translated here by her daughter and son-in-law. An exemplar of the "new woman," Xie was an idealist and a romantic given to florid writing that matches the impressive melodrama of her life. For larger public and academic libraries. Born in 1906 in Xietuoshan, Xie Bingying demonstrated tenacity and decisiveness from a very early age despite the feudalistic Chinese society into which she was born. She was the daughter of a scholar and a traditional mother. Xie's feet were bound at the age of eight, and she was forced into an arranged marriage contract, but she would not allow any of these customs to tether her future. She sacrificed reputation, family, and love for the pursuit of books and literacy, and she threatened to kill herself if her needs were not met. Xie's unflinching character is demonstrated in her fearlessness as a soldier during Chiang Kai-shek's Northern Expedition and her zealous battle for truth and diplomacy in China. She was a tireless warrior on the front lines and a dedicated writer who endured poverty and endangered her life for propagation of the written word. As a potent feminist, she feared the vulnerability of love and its power to divert her from the path to enlightenment. Xie died in January of 2000 while her autobiography was being translated. I enjoyed her descriptions of people and places

This is one of the most inspiring books I've read. Not only is Xie Bingying inspiring, but also the many selfless people whom she met and worked with. I enjoyed her descriptions of people and places. I compliment her family on their translation of her account; the book makes me feel as though I know Xie. It has also given me a much better feel for the Chinese people. Her account describes the magnitude and pain of the people's struggle against oppressive traditions, and mixed into this simultaneously are the fights against invaders and the infighting of the Chinese revolutionary and political movements. The period seems almost to have been all the world's history wrapped up into a single generation in China.

Great handbook

This book is an excellent resource for anyone who is serious about graphic layout. It is not a type book; it does not review fonts individually. Rather, it considers type as a visual element. Accessibly written, someone new to the field could use it, as well as experienced graphic artists and those for whom the page is important. A good investment for the artist on a budget, too.

great additions!

I've used "Thinking with Type" for the last year and a half in the typography classes that I teach. I thought the first edition was a useful tool. Then one of my students ordered this one, and let me look at it...and I was amazed at all of the new information (like a separate page each for numbers, punctuation, and ornaments) and examples that had been added. I ordered it for myself as soon as possible, and will be recommending the second edition to all of my students from now on.
