Who Was John F. Kennedy?

The small boat sped quickly along in the dark. It was a hot night in August. The thirteen men onboard were quiet and tense. Their mission was a scary one: They were looking for Japanese warships in the Pacific Ocean.

Suddenly, there was an explosion.

The small boat was ripped in half by a Japanese destroyer returning to its base. Two of the crew were killed instantly. The other eleven men clung to pieces of the boat until morning. Then the wreckage began to sink. The captain decided they all must swim to the safety of a nearby island. The men didn’t think they could make it.

“Will we ever get out of this?” asked one.

“It can be done,” replied the captain. “We’ll do it.”

One of the men was burned so badly that he could not swim. He told the captain to save himself and the other men. But the captain would not leave the wounded man. He swam for five long hours with the burned man on his back. When they reached the island, the captain discovered two natives and a canoe.

He also discovered a coconut shell on which he carved these words:

NATIVE KNOWS POSIT

HE CAN PILOT 11 ALIVE

NEED SMALL BOAT KENNEDY

He gave the shell with the message to the islanders who went by canoe to another island nearly forty miles away. Six days after the patrol boat was destroyed, the brave and quick-thinking captain and his crew were rescued.

The captain’s name was John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

Chapter 1
Little Boy, Big Family

On May 29, 1917, a baby boy was born to Joseph P. Kennedy, a wealthy, Irish-American businessman, and his wife Rose. They named him John Fitzgerald Kennedy, in honor of Rose’s father—John F. Fitzgerald.

“Honey Fitz” as he was called, had been a popular politician and a former mayor of Boston. When his daughter Rose began dating the young Kennedy boy, Honey Fitz was not so sure he approved. But the couple kept seeing each other and, eventually, Honey Fitz was won over by Joe’s hardworking and ambitious nature.

IRISH IMMIGRATION TO THE UNITED STATES

IN THE 1840S AND 1850S, MORE THAN ONE MILLION IRISH IMMIGRANTS SAILED TO AMERICA. BACK IN IRELAND, THE POTATO CROP HAD FAILED. WITHOUT THEIR STAPLE FOOD, AT LEAST ONE MILLION PEOPLE DIED OF STARVATION AND DISEASE. THE IMMIGRANTS WHO CAME HERE WERE CRAMMED INTO CROWDED, DIRTY SHIPS. NEARLY 20 PERCENT OF THEM DIED BEFORE THEY ARRIVED. THE ONES WHO DID WERE CALLED THE “FAMINE IRISH.” LIKE MANY NEW IMMIGRANT GROUPS, THEY FACED DISCRIMINATION AND HATRED. THEY COULD NOT EASILY FIND JOBS OR PLACES TO LIVE. SIGNS WITH THE WORDS “IRISH NEED NOT APPLY” WERE COMMON. THEY TOOK THE ONLY WORK THEY COULD GET: LAYING RAILROAD TRACKS, SHOVELING COAL, DIGGING CANALS, AND CLEARING SWAMPS.

A great book and a great way for your student to learn about a past president.
By JavaArabica
My fourth grader needed to research a past president and her teacher assigned JFK to her. We found this book online and she read it over a weekend. It was easy to read and she was able to retain the information easier than just looking at facts on the internet. She truly felt she knew about JFK and now she wants to know more about Jackie. Apparently she was a fashion icon and so that was all it took for my daughter. What a great way to learn history and to learn about a president that was frozen in time at the prime of his life due to his premature death. Highly recommended for your student.

Excellent!
By Jarik25
I wish they would actually put this series as being listed in the adult section! Why? Cause they are informative and big worded enough for an adult to enjoy. The illustration are not kiddish though enough for a teen to enjoy. I've read 302 pgs of these books so far, and I found all three of them to be captivating. I never really had an history class, and I loathe textbooks. This is more than I would actually get in a textbook if I read about John F. Kennedy, Albert Einstein, and Neil Armstrong. For instance: I didn't know about Neil Armstrong's daughter, I did know about Albert Einstein's sons only cause I read a 500pg book on him, and it took me two years of sidetracking to get it read. I already knew a lot about the Kennedys because I'm a space fan, and I've read parts of books on him already not too mention documentaries. I read these in about an hour before dinner. But seriously, they should be in the young adult section at least, as well. The only history I have truly learned comes from biographies, documentaries, museum trips, and I love it. I hope this person writes more of these.

Supplemental reading- just the facts
By Mosha
I purchased this book to supplement my grandson's reading on John F. Kennedy. By purchasing this book, I wanted to show my 13 year-old grandson that there were other available sources he could use to help him understand his main reading.
I have since read this book and it is simply a linear volume of facts; and I think the "cartoon" illustrations are to somehow enhance the story, for me, it does not. The story weaves in and out of its basic story line. If you're looking for "just the facts" about the Kennedy clan this book should be okay.

It was the 5000-1 bet. An impossible dream, or so everyone thought. But Leicester City really are Premier League champions, and Jamie Vardy has played a pivotal part in their historic win. Having spent most of his career in the Conference, playing for a Premier League team seemed improbable at best. However, since signing with Leicester City in 2012, Vardy and his team have experienced a meteoric rise. Leicester’s incredible feat has transcended ordinary sports coverage, and newspapers and sports channels around the world have devoted headlines to the team as the world’s media has descended onto the East Midlands. In the age of the "boy wonder" soccer player trained by an academy since childhood, Vardy’s story is truly refreshing and, thanks to his pivotal role in Premier League history, he has suddenly become one of the sport’s most recognized names. The book is completely up-to-date to include the moment Leicester City finally sealed the Premier League title, as a country rejoiced with them and the world watched in wonder.

An Absolute Must-Read
By Amazon Customer
Frank Worrall is a prolific author that knows the game of football. His biographies on Luis Suarez, Gareth Bale, Ryan Giggs, and Chicharito are some of the best you’ll find when it comes to the beautiful game. He does great work for John Blake Publishing time in and time out.

But we have to say that his most recent offering, Jamie Vardy: The Boy from Nowhere, is at a whole new level and is perhaps his greatest work.

The story of Jamie Vardy is a popular one these days, but this one is a bit different and a whole lot better. A lot of time is spent on Vardy’s time in non-league and that experience clearly made him the player he is today. There is also a great discussion of the disappointment he faced as a youth when he was turned away by his local club; we’re sure that Sheffield Wednesday would want him today if given a second chance.

His story is so inspirational, very, very few non-league players make it to the Champions League or the English national team, but Jamie Vardy did and did so against all the odds. He’s an example for others to follow, someone who has overcome a life’s worth of obstacles to reach the peak of professional and international football.

This book also points out his indiscretions, doesn’t shove them under the rug so to speak. Those issues, which are isolated and in the past, make up just another set of obstacles. Vardy has since put the negativity behind him and is looking toward the future, his and the future for those like him. His latest project, the V9 Academy, gives back to the sport and gives other talented footballers the chance to make it big, Jamie Vardy big.

If you want to learn about Vardy and his background and career, then this is the book for you. You don’t have to wait for his autobiography to come out in October; you can simply enjoy this one now.

It’s a great story of doing the unexpected, along the lines of Horatio Alger or Rocky. I’m glad that Worrall and John Blake teamed up for this one. It is a must-read because it captures the spirit and journey of Jamie Vardy, the boy from nowhere that made it big everywhere.

From Publishers Weekly
The florid 16th Anita Blake novel (after 2007's The Harlequin) updates Anita's endlessly erotic adventures as a living vampire with many weird lovers. Anita serves her vampire sweetie Jean-Claude, Master of the City of St. Louis, obsessed with feeding him and her own need to leech off of others' sexual pleasure or ardeur while retaining her rep as vampire executioner (despite the seeming conflict of interest), U.S. marshal and necromancer. She's also accompanying her bed-buddy Jason Schuyler to visit his dying estranged father in North Carolina. After arriving, Jason's mistaken for his rich cousin Keith Summerland, who's ditched his bride-to-be to run off with the wife of a vampire Master, giving Anita a case to solve between wild orgies with wereanimals. Hamilton chronicles Anita's escapades with a growing air of ennui, which longtime readers can't help sharing as sex increasingly takes the place of plot and character development. (June)

Jason's turn
By Bookelf
Jason has to return home to see his father who is dying of cancer. The problem is, Jason's dad abused him as a child and believes he is gay. Anita agrees to tag along as his lover. Unfortunately, Jason bears an amazing likeness to the Summerlands. Keith Summerland, a real pain is getting married in his hometown, and Jason is mistaken for Keith. Keith in the meantime has run off with wife of the Master of Charleston. The media makes everything complicated and the Mother of Darkness calls Anita's tiger.
I enjoyed this one as Jason has always hovered at the edges. I wish the reunion with his father had been more realistic.

Worst Book in the Series
By Magnolia
I've had this installment of the Anita Blake series in my nightstand for over a year because I grew tired of the reoccuring issues/themes in the last couple of books; pissing contests with police or other law enforcement because she's a woman, guilt over ardeur and inability to control it, repetitiveness of sayings from book to book, as well as within the same book, lack of Jean Claude as a major character, etc. So, finally decided to pick it up after a year of stalling and again found myself disappointed and bored. Same issues occur within this book, except now there's a total lack of storyline. So, this will be the last time I make a Laurell K. Hamilton purchase (not just Anita Blake related, but all other publications also). I would like to finish the series in hopes that the flash of brillance seen in the first couple of books returns. However, I will be borrowing from the library from now on since these books are not worth spending money on.

Not as crappy as the last couple but really just a money grab.
By Amazon Customer
It isn't quite the porno of some of the previous books. There is a lot of Anita sweating over silly crap that goes on for pages and pages. The scary part, yes part, was up to the usual standard, but seemed tacked on. The mother of all vampires makes a brief visit. Totally a drive-by. The entire book felt like "gee, I have a house payment coming up so let's crank out something quick". Very little in character or plot development. Richard shows up pretty much long enough to do an attempted rape and then leave in a huff. Had the, now mandatory, group sex, but skipped most of the details. Well the second one did anyway, thank goodness. Laurell, PLEASE QUIT WRITING PORNO. You have other series to do that crap. Just write the adventure and violence and scary and "how in the world will she survive this". You are the best at that. But when you have Anita whining and freaking out over crap that she did about a chapter back and then silly, detailed sex... Come on. With that said, I pre-ordered Skin Trade. Looks like Edward is back. Loved those. Action, Adventure, not just jerking material. Well, I hope. Maybe I just funded some more of Laurell's fetish wear.

A Most Holy War: The Albigensian Crusade and the Battle for Christendom (Pivotal Moments in World History), by Mark Gregory Pegg

In January of 1208, a papal legate was murdered on the banks of the Rhone in southern France. A furious Pope Innocent III accused heretics of the crime and called upon all Christians to exterminate heresy between the Garonne and Rhone rivers--a vast region now known as Languedoc--in a great crusade. This most holy war, the first in which Christians were promised salvation for killing other Christians, lasted twenty bloody years--it was a long savage battle for the soul of Christendom.
In A Most Holy War, historian Mark Pegg has produced a swift-moving, gripping narrative of this horrific crusade, drawing in part on thousands of testimonies collected by inquisitors in the years 1235 to 1245. These accounts of ordinary men and women, remembering what it was like to live through such brutal times, bring the story vividly to life. Pegg argues that generations of historians (and novelists) have misunderstood the crusade; they assumed it was a war against the Cathars, the most famous heretics of the Middle Ages. The Cathars, Pegg reveals, never existed. He further shows how a millennial fervor about "cleansing" the world of heresy, coupled with a fear that Christendom was being eaten away from within by heretics who looked no different than other Christians, made the battles, sieges, and massacres of the crusade almost apocalyptic in their cruel intensity. In responding to this fear with a holy genocidal war, Innocent III fundamentally changed how Western civilization dealt with individuals accused of corrupting society. This fundamental change, Pegg argues, led directly to the creation of the inquisition, the rise of an anti-Semitism dedicated to the violent elimination of Jews, and even the holy violence of the Reconquista in Spain and in the New World in the fifteenth century. All derive their divinely sanctioned slaughter from the Albigensian Crusade.
Haunting and immersive, A Most Holy War opens an important new perspective on a truly pivotal moment in world history, a first and distant foreshadowing of the genocide and holy violence in the modern world.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. When a papal legate was murdered in southern France in 1208, Pope Innocent III's reaction was swift and harsh. Convinced that the villages between Montpelier and Bordeaux were hideouts for heretics and accusing the count of Toulouse of protecting them, the pope issued his now famous plea for all knights and barons to be signed with the cross and to drive out all heretics in a great crusade. The Albigensian Crusade was the only one of the medieval crusades to pit Christian against Christian. In this lively and fast-paced inaugural book in Oxford's Pivotal Moments in World History series, Pegg grippingly retells the story of a crusade built on legend, not truth. The pope preached to his armies that whoever slaughtered these alleged heretics would not only cleanse his own soul but the soul of Christendom as well. This crusade, as Pegg remarkably demonstrates, introduced genocide into the world and paved the way for Christians to engage in the inquisitions against Jews and the crusades against Muslims that marked the remainder of the Middle Ages. Drawing on numerous primary documents, Pegg's compelling history offers fresh glimpses into the nature of religious violence as well as the easy ways that religions often fall into intolerance. Review

"[L]ively and fast-paced inaugural book in Oxford's 'Pivotal Moments in World History' series.... Drawing on numerous primary documents, Pegg's compelling history offers fresh glimpses, accounts of prophecies, answered prayers, and above all, forgiveness."--Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"As a social history of early thirteenth-century Languedoc, Pegg's work is terrific.... Throughout, Pegg places the supposed heretics firmly in very immediate local cultural, rather than wider religious or ecclesiastical contexts.... Mark Gregory Pegg's realization of Languedoc society is exceptional in its subtlety and accessibility."--imes Literary Supplement

Author's Skewed Perspective on Crusade
By Arador
"A Most Holy War: The Albigensian Crusade and the Battle for Christendom" by Mark Gregory Pegg is an attempt to address misconceptions regarding the Cathar heretics and modern portrayals of them. Pegg makes a strong case that the Cathars never existed, and that the twenty year long crusade in Southern France was a crusade against Albigensian heretics in a very specific geographic area. He has a very negative view towards past histories of these events, and he criticized the sources used in previous scholarship.

Pegg wrote that the Albigensian Crusade was a central event in the Middle Ages. It was the first time a pope called a crusade against Western Christians by declaring them heretics. Christians fought Christians, those who fought for the Pope were promised salvation and the heretics were killed for their unorthodox beliefs. He links the brutal crusade with the medieval mindset, propagated by the Church, in which heretics should be feared and hunted down because they appear so similar to orthodox Christians as to be indistinguishable but in reality they are a dire threat all of Christendom. Crusaders no longer had to travel to the Holy Land in order to receive absolution for sins; a campaign in France was an easier route to the same objective.

While Pegg states that there was a "moral obligation for mass murder," the Pope was not telling everyone to go to France and kill heretics. There actually seemed to be some hesitation by the public to join this crusade, as Simon de Montfort had to resort to using mercenary armies. Pegg also tries to link the Albigensian Crusade with Christ's sacrifice on the Cross, and that those who fought fellow Christians were imitating Christ. That connection was a stretch considering that Christ did not advocate violence, especially not against one's co-religionists.

Pegg also stated that, "The Albigensian Crusade ushered genocide into the West by linking divine salvation to mass murder." He then went on to describe six narrow categories with which to define genocide so that it fits his concept of the Albigensian Crusade. Redemptive homicide against one's heretical neighbor became acceptable crusade practice and added another enemy to the list of acceptable crusading targets.

The chapters where Pegg described the heretics and some of their practices might be difficult for some readers to follow. Those sections seemed overly repetitive and drawn out to ensure the reader got the point. Good men and women were named and their societal and religious practices were explained. Stylistically the rest of the book flowed rather well and the reader will not get slowed down even though there is twenty years of history to read through before the end.

Pegg provides a book which is easy to read and which sheds some new light on the subject of the Albigensian Crusades. He provided sources which support his thesis but does not utilize any contradictory evidence. His personal disregard for past scholarship and inability to remain unbiased in his writing, his emphasis on genocide, and calling the crusade an imitation of Christ detracted from the credibility of the book.

Pope Innocent III and a holy genocidal war
By P. A. Calta
A good story of an era about which little has been written but that has implications for today. This is not a quick read, but does tell of an interesting historical time period. Author debunks the Cathar influence in the heresies of the time.

Evil versus Evil.
By John B. Hoehn
This informative and painfully insightful history of the persecution of one brand of Christianity by another brand of Christianity is certainly interesting, in the same way that any crime story is interesting.

But it is a crime story. The problem I see is that Mark Pegg seems not to understand who the criminals were and who the victims are. Although he reveals (largely through the words and records of their murderers and persecutors) that the more simple, non-papal, Albigensian Christians were known as bon home or "good men" to their neighbors and persecutors alike, his book minimizes their devotion and dedication. He seems to think that they were just different because their Provencal society had social needs and conventions that created them. And golly gee, didn't that get them into a pack of trouble! Why they could be faithful, by the thousands, unto death against the assembled might of arms, rulers, and pope for such a vapid and superficial faith, is never even hinted at by Pegg.

Likewise the Papal persecutors are presented as just good old Christians doing terrible things. The Catholic hagiography inspired by or invented to justify this bloody persecution is recounted mostly non-critically. And although clearly Pegg is critical of mass murders, ethnic cleansing, and religious intollerance, this is presented as a Christian problem, one that excessive love of Christ even worsens!

Trying to explain evil from a limited humanistic or modernistic viewpoint, is like trying to explain what happened at Hiroshima by carefully analysis of the chemical makeup of the bomb or the flight characteristics of the Enola Gay. While such a narrow focus may be perfectly true, it will not tell you the Truth.

This Christian crime story is not comprehensible outside of the broader context of a fallen Roman church with a corrupt and corrupting hierarchy, in unholy alliance with equally corrupt political powers, wealth, and pomp. The fact that this unholy power combination dares use the name of Christian against a grass roots attempt in Provencal to return to a more authentic, apostolic, and true version of Christianity is the real crime behind the multiple crimes of this story.

Read this book for information, but not for understanding. Besides telling of Cathar, Albigensian, Waldensian victims, Christianity and Christ Himself are victimized by Pegg's narrow analysis.

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY KIRKUS REVIEWS

Never go back—but Jack Reacher does, and the past finally catches up with him. . . . Never Go Back is a novel of action-charged suspense starring “one of the best thriller characters at work today” (Newsweek).

Former military cop Jack Reacher makes it all the way from snowbound South Dakota to his destination in northeastern Virginia, near Washington, D.C.: the headquarters of his old unit, the 110th MP. The old stone building is the closest thing to a home he ever had.

Reacher is there to meet—in person—the new commanding officer, Major Susan Turner, so far just a warm, intriguing voice on the phone.

But it isn’t Turner behind the CO’s desk. And Reacher is hit with two pieces of shocking news, one with serious criminal consequences, and one too personal to even think about.

When threatened, you can run or fight.

Reacher fights, aiming to find Turner and clear his name, barely a step ahead of the army, and the FBI, and the D.C. Metro police, and four unidentified thugs.

Combining an intricate puzzle of a plot and an exciting chase for truth and justice, Lee Child puts Reacher through his paces—and makes him question who he is, what he’s done, and the very future of his untethered life on the open road.

Don’t miss Lee Child’s short story “High Heat” in the back of the book.

Praise for Never Go Back

“A breathless cross-country spree . . . some of the best, wiliest writing [Lee] Child has ever done . . . Child’s bodacious action hero, Jack Reacher, has already tramped through 17 novels and three e-book singles. But his latest, Never Go Back, may be the best desert island reading in the series. It’s exceptionally well plotted. And full of wild surprises. And wise about Reacher’s peculiar nature. And positively Bunyanesque in its admiring contributions to Reacher lore.”—Janet Maslin, The New York Times

“Welcome to the relentless world of Jack Reacher and his impressive tendency to be in the wrong place at the right time. . . . Child has created an iconic character that other thriller writers try to emulate but don’t come close to matching. He has a talent for taking material that in the hands of other authors would be stale and making it seem fresh. . . . Tight and compelling . . . Never Go Back is one of Child’s best novels.”—Associated Press

“An adrenaline-charged, action-packed thriller . . . impossible to put down.”—Lansing State Journal

“The dialogue has never been sharper. . . . The pages turn themselves.”—San Antonio Express-News

“For the pure pleasure of uncomplicated, nonstop action, no one touches Reacher.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Brilliant . . . Child never, ever slips. He keeps the action cranking better than anyone, but, best of all, he keeps us guessing about Reacher.”—Booklist (starred review)

“One of the best in the series.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Starred Review. Since talking to Maj. Susan Turner on the telephone from South Dakota in 2010's 61 Hours (bestseller Childs's 14th Jack Reacher novel), the former military cop has been heading to the Virginia headquarters of his old unit, the 110th MP, in hopes of meeting her. In this 18th outing, Reacher finally arrives in Virginia, where his plan to meet Turner is initially thwarted by thugs who want to keep them apart. An arrest for a crime Reacher doesn't remember committing 16 years earlier and the dangled bait that he might be a father provoke him to run, kicking off a cross-country odyssey. As usual, head-busting physicality and analytical problem solving play key roles in Reacher's fight to prove his innocence and expose his enemies. Manhunts on both coasts, a link to corruption in Afghanistan in the wake of the U.S. military drawdown, and the possibility for romance between Reacher and Turner make this entry one of the best in the series. From Booklist
*Starred Review* Jack Reacher, the loner thumbing his way through life, despises entanglements. So what could he possibly be doing going back to his old barracks in Washington, D.C., to take a woman to dinner? Yes, the woman, Major Susan Turner, is now the C.O. of Reacher’s former unit, and, yes, he liked her voice when he talked to her on the phone in 61 Hours (2010), but, really, Reacher, what were you thinking? Naturally, when Reacher arrives on the base to ask Turner out, he discovers a whopping mess—and lands in the middle of it. Turner is in the brig, and the army promptly arrests Reacher on what seems to be a trumped-up charge involving a case from decades ago. And what’s this about Reacher having a daughter, of all things, whose mother is suing for child support? None of it makes sense, except that somehow it must all tie together. Nothing to do but break out of the brig, with Turner in tow, and set things right, which requires a cross-country road trip, more than a little rough stuff, and a whole lot of fretting about entanglements. Child never, ever slips. He keeps the action cranking better than anyone, but, best of all, he keeps us guessing about Reacher. Will he, of all people (“Ninety-nine of us grow up to fear the howling wolf, and one grows up to envy it. I’m that guy.”), really hang up his toothbrush (his only traveling accoutrement) this time? Child has spent 17 novels committing his hero to the call of the wild, and now he dangles a dinner date and a possible daughter in front of the howling wolf? Brilliant. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Published in nearly 40 countries and more than 70 languages with more than 70 million copies in print, the Jack Reacher series is a publishing phenomenon and won’t go away anytime soon. --Bill Ott

Where is Jack Reacher?
By Rosemary
Where is Jack Reacher? Who is this imposter?

I am a huge Lee Child / Jack Reacher fan, and have been reading these books for years, but it has got to the point where I say that this could very well be my last Jack Reacher purchase. It pains me to say this, as these books have been the highlight of my reading calender for so long, but the decline has become more noticeable with this book.

There were a few times when I seriously considered not finishing the book, but this is Lee Child and Reacher, surely it can only get better? No, the writing was consistent throughout, it was boring and repetitive. The plot was weak, and every solution to a problem on both sides was just too convenient, unbelievably so on many occasions.

Jack Reacher, in my opinion, has become arrogant - he is no longer the Jack Reacher I have enjoyed reading about all these years. This new Jack does things because he can - not because he must in order to survive. The ridiculous fire episode and the aeroplane scene clinched the deal for me.

The ending, and the reason for all the trouble Jack found himself in, was crazy, far-fetched and not what we have come to expect from Lee Child either.

I have been holding back on this review for days, but when you take the price of this book and what is between the covers, I think it is important that potential readers know that this is not up to Lee Child's earlier standards.

I am definitely the minority when it comes to reviewing this book - the 5 star reviews are rolling in on both Amazon and Goodreads. Maybe you will still enjoy this book if you are a die-hard Reacher fan, if not, I would give it a skip and rather try Lee Childs earlier Jack Reacher novels - they were brilliant.

Would I recommend this book? No
Will I buy the next book? Not on pre-order, I will wait for the reviews to come in first before buying - if at all.

Is author Child burning out?
By Brian Baker
For the last couple of books, Jack Reacher has been trying to make it back to the East Coast to meet the woman who has, up to this point, simply been a voice on the phone helping him out on his adventures.

Well, he finally makes it, and when he shows up at the headquarters of the MP unit she now commands, he's mousetrapped. She's been arrested and relieved of command, and he's been accused of crimes he'd allegedly committed back when he was an MP himself; he's recalled back into active duty - making him subject to military discipline and judicial punishment - and placed under arrest.

He manages to break her and himself out of jail, and the rest of the story is about how he tries to clear both their names by getting to the truth at the bottom of these events.

I've long been a Reacher fan, having read the entire body of work, and thoroughly enjoyed them until the last few offerings. I thought the last two were particularly weak. There are elements of this book that I thought were pretty well done... somewhat reminiscent of the classic Reacher of yore.

Unfortunately, when I got to the end of the story and it was revealed what was actually driving this entire plot against Reacher and his girlfriend, I had to wonder what author Child had been smoking. I can't say more because it would be a huge spoiler. I will say this: I thought it was absolutely ridiculous.

Further, there wasn't much "payoff" to the reader in the way the story ended. Certainly not in the sense of the "classic" Reacher books of old. In many ways, Reacher's somewhat of a bystander or observer in the resolution of this story.

Overall, I found the book to be somewhat shallow and rushed. Not nearly as emotionally engaging as the earlier Reacher books. I have to wonder if, after having written so many of them, Child is getting tired of flogging a dying horse; if the well's going dry.

Anyway, 3 stars. Not as bad as the last two books, but not nearly as good as the early works.

Beware which version you order!!
By Wisconsin Jim
I really enjoyed this story, a typical Jack Reacher tale with lots of excitement, action and a mystery to be unraveled. Unfortunately for me, I ended up having to purchase this story twice. Why would that be necessary you might ask? Glad you asked! My paperback version (2014 Dell Mass Market Edition, April 2014 edition) arrived brand new and everything was fine as I really got into the story, quite a page turner. Then I finished chapter 56 on page 416. The very next page in this book was page 129 (again) and the pages continued through page 176. The next page after that was page 465. (see the photos I've attached to my review) The pages continued as normal after that, however this paperback version of the book is quite worthless as a story with dozens of pages missing from it. So in order to continue where I left off I ended up ordering the kindle version for my tablet to get the whole story. This is why I dinged my review a star. Obviously, the problem is not with the retailer, nor the distributor but with the publisher for putting out such an incomplete book. Hopefully mine was just a fluke and others printed as they are supposed to be. But be warned and check the pages just in case! To their credit, Amazon was very quick with a refund for this defective book.
