By Anthro-dr
I wish there had been more reviews of this book. I love the Islamic Foundation and all, but good LORD! What bad poetry, how lacking in metre, how age-inappropriate a lot of the language is. I'm kicking myself for buying it ... because my daughter loves it (it's childish mostly, and the pictures are quite childishly elementary) and she makes me read it to her, and the poetry (or lack of it) is so grating as to make it a distressing experience for me. Eleven twelve - for truth i must delve?! Nineteen twenty - my provision is plenty??

Western Muslim children
By Kim Abla
This book of nursery rhymes is perfect for "Western" Muslim parents to read with their children. The rhythm of the rhymes are familiar since most are based on traditional English language nursery rhymes. Some of the rhymes show a writer that "tried too hard" when the information in the rhyme took precedence over the beat. The illustrations are colorful and the size is perfect for reading time with a toddler in your lap. This book would make a great baby shower gift...which is exactly how I plan to use my copy.

Excellent nursery rhymes
By Mary Ann
Great introduction for children to Islam with catchy tunes, especially works if you know the tunes the nursery rhymes the author is adapting. Hardback and great for little hands. I recommend ages 2-4 years old.

Well worth the money
By Caroline L.
I'm a fan of several of the authors in this anthology: Garth Nix, Neil Gaiman, Patrick Rothfuss, and George RR Martin. I've been waiting for as long as Patrick Rothfuss told his fans that he had a story about Bast.

That's what I read first. It was beautifully done, and it was a perfect story about Bast. I am now content to wait for his novella on Auri and the Underthing The Slow Regard of Silent Things coming out this fall.

I read George RR Martin's story about the older Targaryens. It was good, and it was more hasty than his novels. That meant that it moved at a practically breakneck speed for him, and it was easier to keep track of than his deep games. I liked it a lot.

I then read Garth Nix's nonsense stories about godlets, and it was charming and adorable ESPECIALLY because there's a tiny elephant named Rosie who is a major character. Somehow, he sets up an entire world in a brief space. Lovely. It was a good story before his recent release of Clariel: The Lost Abhorsen.

The last that I read (of course I'm going to read the entirety of the anthology now that I've seen the quality) was Neil Gaiman's on the Marquis de Carabas. It tells you almost nothing, but it pulled me back into the world of Neverwhere: A Novel. It was nice.

This book is well worth the money.

Cost me $120, with no regrets.
By Michael Trick
I bought the book for the Scott Lynch (Lies of Loch Lamora) story, which was wonderful, but the other stories introduced me to a whole slew of characters whose authors write of scams, misdirection, and "not everything seems as it appears". Most stories slant towards the science fiction/fantasy side, but not all: there are rogues everywhere. I ended up buying the first book of perhaps a dozen series based on the creativity in the short stories. Turned out to be an expensive purchase (for the irony impaired: not for the book itself but for the followup purchases) that has added to my "to be read" pile immensely. Which is I guess why authors put their stories in collections like this. A great introduction to a wide range of creative authors and interesting characters.

Vikram Seth's novel is, at its core, a love story: Lata and her mother, Mrs. Rupa Mehra, are both trying to find -- through love or through exacting maternal appraisal -- a suitable boy for Lata to marry. Set in the early 1950s, in an India newly independent and struggling through a time of crisis, A Suitable Boy takes us into the richly imagined world of four large extended families and spins a compulsively readable tale of their lives and loves. A sweeping panoramic portrait of a complex, multiethnic society in flux, A Suitable Boy remains the story of ordinary people caught up in a web of love and ambition, humor and sadness, prejudice and reconciliation, the most delicate social etiquette and the most appalling violence.

Here he abandons the compression of poetry to produce an enormous novel that will enthrall most readers; those who are fazed by a marathon read, however, may gasp for mercy. Set in the post-colonial India of the 1950s, this sprawling saga involves four families--the Mehras, the Kapoors, the Chatterjis and the Khans--whose domestic crises illuminate the historical and social events of the era. Like an old-fashioned soap opera (or a Bombay talkie), the multi-charactered plot pits mothers against daughters, fathers against sons, Hindus against Muslims and small farmers against greedy landowners facing government-ordered dispossession. The story revolves around independent-minded Lata Mehra: Will she defy the stern order of her widowed upper-caste Hindu mother by marrying the Muslim youth she loves? The search for Lata's husband expands into a richly detailed and exotically vivid narrative that crisscrosses the fabric of India. Seth's panoramic scenes take the reader into law courts, religious processions, bloody riots, academia--even the shoe trade. Portraits of actual figures are incisive; the cameo of Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, for example, captures his high-minded, well-meaning indecision. Seth's point of view is both wry and affectionate, and his voluble, palpably atmospheric narrative teems with chaotic, irrepressible life. 100,000 first printing; $200,000 ad/promo; BOMC main selection; QPB alternate; author tour.

From Library Journal
Opening and closing with a wedding, this novel is ostensibly the story of a Hindu family trying to find a suitable husband for their younger daughter, Lata. Who will the suitable boy turn out to be? The dashing Kabir, with whom Lata falls in love? The ambitious businessman whom Lata's mother favors? Or the sophisticated poet her relatives choose? The interwoven stories of four families linked by marriage form the background for this marital quest. It proves slow-moving at first, but the patient reader will inevitably be caught up in the compelling rhythms of a richly complex tale. The setting--India in the 1950s--is vividly realized: the enormity of the subcontinent, its overpowering heat, lush gardens, colorful festivals, and exotic foods. Memorable characters abound; not since Dickens has there been such a lively and idiosyncratic cast crowded into one novel. Drama is provided by the simmering conflict between Hindu and Muslim, which breaks out unexpectedly throughout the novel. This is old-fashioned storytelling at its best; highly recommended. BOMC and Quality Paperback alternates; previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 1/93.

From Kirkus Reviews
Set in newly independent India, Nehru's early 1950's, this adipose saga counterbalances a book of social manners--the marrying off of a well-to-do educated young woman, Lata Mehra--with a historical account (even at the level of transcribed parliamentary debate) of the subcontinent trying to find its societal bearings vis-…-vis language, religion, and the redistribution of estate-lands taken off the hands of the elite. Set mainly in Brahmpur, the story encompasses four well-off families, with a focus mostly on the younger members--poets, academics, playboys, newlyweds--who stitch a pattern of peccadillo through their elders' expectations. Meanwhile, Seth, whose California novel in verse, The Golden Gate (1986), was clever and energetic in concept but dull and soapy in final effect, falls into the same trap here: lots of stuff obviously--at a marathon 1300-plus pages--but characters made out of clich‚, with background-India the very stuffed pillow of local color that keeps them standing. The book, too, fairly squeaks with its own pleasure in itself, larded with poetry and a general recommendation of art over politics and money: the characters it spends the most time over are narcissists. Anyone wanting to read how a marriageable daughter can X-ray a whole society ought to let this cream-puff-wrapped-in-a-cinder-block pass and return to Tanizaki's classic Japanese masterpiece, The Makioka Sisters. Fat (the publishing world's delayed reparation for Rushdie's Satanic Verses?) but fatuous. Like Jane Austen in its quality, sharp-eyed social satire, and focus on the business of finding a suitable match. Wonderful!
By Guy in Brooklyn
This is a long book (1500 pages), and I approached it thinking I would put it down after 100 pages or so. But to my surprise I was plunged into the world of these four families and I carried this VERY heavy book with me everywhere (including to China). Others have compared the book to Dickens, but I kept thinking of Jane Austen (who is mentioned at one point in the novel). As in Austen, the business of getting married is central to the book, and the juxtaposition of being suitable in terms of money, class, and romance is central. But A Suitable Boy is also like Austen in the sharp-eyed social satire that appears time and again. Many scenes unfold with wit and surprise. Academics, social climbing and over-sentimental mothers, effete sophisticates who have little notion of how they would get on in the world without family money yet are quick to criticize those who make their way on their own, grasping, selfish, shallow young wives -- all come under Vikram Seth's microscope. I loved this book. My wife looked at me dubiously as I brought it with me everywhere and declared she would not read such a long tome, then found that she too was carrying it everywhere because she wanted to read more and more about these fascinating families. Read it!

A richly rewarding read
By vodkasauce
I absolutely cannot say enough about this book. If first read it about five years ago, and, as I'm sure you will be, I approached it as a little bit of a challenge. As many people have commented, this book is so long its almost hard to hold, but as I got to the last few hundred pages, I kept wishing that there would be more and more and more. I never wanted to stop reading it. I read a lot of novels in a year, but very few have stuck with me the way this one has. Just say the words "A Suitable Boy" and I am transported back into the lives of the main characters, and I still get emotional over the choice the Lata makes.

Many reviewers have also commented about how this is a sprawling family drama, which almost doesn't do justice to the way you, the reader, infiltrate these characters' lives, and that you learn an awful lot about Indian history. That is very true, and in fact, I think I know more about 1950's India, and Indian history in general, from reading this book than I do from a class I took in college on the subject, but A Suitable Boy isn't a history book. Seth doesn't wonder away from the story for a not-so-brief lecture on the history of land rights in India, he weaves these social and political concerns so effortlessly into the backdrop of this story that you're almost surprised in the end by how much you've learned.

So if you're on the fence, not really sure if it's too long, or too dense, or if you're not a history or Indian culture buff, stop worrying. This book has something for absolutely everyone, and will make you love each and every one of the characters. From the moment Lata's mother declares she intends to find a husband for her daughter, to the very last page, you will be completely enthralled by this world.

Loved this, loved this, loved this!!!!
By Margaret Karmazin
It took me months to read it because I have the probably odd habit of reading different books at the same time in different places in the house. This was my read-while-eating-if-eating-by-myself tome. Like in a Russian novel, at first it is hard to keep track of who all the characters were and thank heavens the author included a family tree at the beginning for the reader to consult, which I had to do at first. After a while, I knew who everyone was. As good authors do, he gave everyone equal importance (I notice this about TV series that I especially enjoy too, like Mad Men) so that the prolific letter writing of Lata's mother gets the same serious (with some dry humor tossed in) attention as the struggles and antics of high ranking politicians in 1950s India. Pretty much every character was lovable in his/her own way (with some exceptions) and you end up rooting for them all, even if their interests clash. A masterpiece, Mr. Seth! Please write another one for me!

Feynman's Rainbow: A Search for Beauty in Physics and in Life, by Leonard Mlodinow

Some of the brightest minds in science have passed through the halls of the California Institute of Technology. In the early 1980s, Leonard Mlodinow joined their ranks to begin a postdoctoral fellowship. Afraid he was not smart enough to be there, despite his groundbreaking Ph.D. thesis, he took his insecurities to Richard Feynman, Caltech’s intimidating resident genius and iconoclast. So began a pivotal year in a young man’s life. Though a series of fascinating exchanges, Mlodinow and Feynman delve into the nature of science, creativity, love mathematics, happiness, God, art, pleasures and ambition, producing a moving portrait of a friendship and an affecting account of Feynman’s final creative years.

From Publishers Weekly
The late Nobel laureate Richard Feynman has been virtually canonized as the People's Physicist-an earthy, bongo-playing free spirit who delighted in puncturing the pomposity of the establishment. In this memoir, by ex-physicist and Star Trek writer Mlodinow, of a stint as a post-doctoral colleague of Feynman's at Caltech, the aging physicist still cracks wise, crashes parties, works on his physics at a strip joint and needles stuffed-shirt academics. Mlodinow was something of a Feynman-esque character himself-he liked to smoke pot with the garbage man next door and was working on a screenplay-so he turned to the older scientist for life lessons. And that's where this otherwise engaging book goes wrong, because, truth be told, Feynman was at his best only when talking about physics. Mlodinow taped many of their conversations, and transcribes them at length here, to the book's detriment. Feynman holds forth on the creative process, art and modern novels ("The few that I've looked at, I can't stand them"), but as far as insights go, platitudes like "Remember, it's supposed to be fun" (a thought inspired by the titular rainbow) are about as good as it gets. Fortunately, Mlodinow's accessible style manages to convey Feynman's cantankerous appeal as well as some of the weirdness of theoretical physics without overtaxing lay readers, while his deft, funny, novelistic portraits of its practitioners, like the (as portrayed here) toweringly pretentious and touchingly human Nobelist Murray Gell-Mann, bring this seemingly gray sub-culture to vivid life.

Entertaining
By Shashikiran Kolar
Well, this book makes an evening of good reading. Feynman fans would instantly identify with his vintage mannerisms such as scorn for psychology and philosophy, showmanship and his wonder of nature. It contains Feynman's views of how a scientists life should be, how he must go about choosing problems and the emphasis that he must lay on his belief of his capabilities and the problems tractability.
But, more than all the above, this book is about the authors struggles with high expectations. He portrays the emotional lows that graduate students and fresh graduates undergo when they step out to the real world. It tells you that no matter how smart you are, which school you went to, or the quality of work you produce, there would always be moments of self doubt. Feynman himself faced such fallow times more than once, even after he won the Nobel.
Surprisingly, the author does not mention that Feynman went through exactly the same dilemma when he got out of Los Alamos. He was being offered positions with high salary from Berkeley, Institute of Advanced Study, Cornell etc. Feynman felt that he did not deserve these posts as he would not produce any good work any more in his life. How he got over this feeling is a wonderful story in itself.
Overall, I guess the book is worth buying if you are interested in the life of a scientist in general, especially a young one.

Advice to a Young Physicist
By Rob Hardy
There were plenty of famous physicists in the twentieth century, but none as endearing and downright funny as Richard Feynman. If you have ever read his wonderful memoir _Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!_, you know plenty about the humorous side of the serious physicist, the man who originated quantum electrodynamics as well as plenty of other accomplishments within his field, to say nothing of playing the bongos. Now there is an unusual memoir, a tribute from a young physicist who came within Feynman's orbit at Caltech in the early 1980s. _Feynman's Rainbow: A Search for Beauty in Physics and in Life_ (Warner Books) by Leonard Mlodinow gives us another snapshot of Feynman, which would always be welcome, but this one is special. Mlodinow was starting up to be an academic physicist, and got to get advice from Feynman on the task, as well as on what is important in life. Mlodinow presciently taped many of the sessions, and got around to transcribing them only recently. Feynman has lots to teach us still, even if we aren't physicists.
Part of the attraction of this little volume is that while it is about Feynman, it is also about Mlodinow's discomfort as a whiz kid brought in to work at Caltech. He was glad to get the appointment, but also intimidated. "These people at Caltech might actually expect something of me." He didn't know how to start, and floundered for months, until he decided to talk with Feynman, just down the hall, about what he thought about string theory. "Look," Feynman said dismissively, "If you really believed in string theory, you wouldn't come here asking me. You'd come here _telling_ me." The lesson was, find something you believe in and go to work. In Feynman's view, it wouldn't do to work on just anything. If you weren't working on something beautiful, and something you believed in, then the work wouldn't be fun. And fun was essential: "For me, physics is more fun than anything else or I couldn't be doing it." Feynman isn't the only curious character in this memoir. Next door to Mlodinow's office is another Nobel winner, Murray Gell-Mann who had brought the unifying theory of quarks to subatomic particles. John Schwarz, working alone for many years, finally brings out string theory. Stephen Wolfram appears, before "Mathematica" and his own rewrite of science, to eat a pound of rare roast beef. There is also a good deal of science in the book, a brief summary of where physics stood at the end of the millennium.
Mlodinow had a hobby of writing during the time, writing screenplays, which some of his fellow physicists must have thought beneath him. Feynman didn't influence him directly to go into writing, but at least partially because of Feynman's teaching about going after the work that is fun, he wound up writing rather than doing physics. He left Caltech to write an acclaimed history of geometry, and even scripts for _Star Trek_. It is obvious he absorbed the lessons he has generously shared with us in this amusing book, for he left Caltech hoping that he could do something Feynman would admire. "And then I thought, no, even better, I hope that someday I will write something that I would admire." Very nice work, Mr. Feynman.

Feynman on Life and the Joy of Physics
By Cassey Lee
Richard Feynman and Gell-Man Murray are two towering figures in 20th Century Physics. The book begins with the writer's arrival at Caltech as a fresh postdoc with a PhD from Berkeley in the 1980s. In this little autobiographical book, the author writes about his experiences at Caltech focusing on his interactions with Feynman and Murray - their characters and rivalry. Physics take a back seat in this book. Instead, the author attempts to tell a very human (and sometimes sad) story about himself, Feynman and Murray. I find this book interesting for two reasons. First, the author shares his experience about the insecurities that many PhD graduates have about their ability to do meaningful research work after the PhD (especially when one's PhD work was considered important enough to land a Caltech postdoc). Second, it provides a few glimpses of what Feynman and Murray were like at close range - human beings observed on a daily basis (and at their natural habitat). Overall, I cannot help but get the feeling that Feynman comes across as a more 'humane' person than Murray in this book. The writer doesn't apologize for his bias towards Feynman and he does gives examples of Murray's generosity (e.g. his support and belief on Schwartz who toiled for years with the String Theory). He repeatedly emphasizes on the different styles and outlook (life philosophy) of Feynman and Murray. Feynman is more interested in interesting problems and derives tremendous joy from doing physics. Murray, the smart one who revels in demonstrating his diverse knowledge. At the end, the writer favours Feynman's approach to life partly because of his own interests and inclination - towards writing. For it was Feynman who advocated the pursuit of things that truly brings joy. This is a book that would interest readers who enjoy reading about the lives of eminent scientists especially Feynman.

A monumental study of one of America's greatest architects
By John H. Stassen
Students of the Chicago School of Architecture owe a deep debt of gratitude to Donald Hoffmann for his pioneering work on John Wellborn Root who, along with Louis Sullivan, were the pioneers of late 19th century urban architecture in America. This is an important book for any architectural library.

Hoffman resolves the ironies of the architect John Root.
By xixi@sowega.net or Matthew M. Moye
Root's Ironic Legacy Hoffman makes a thorough case for John Wellborn Root's place as one of America's great architects. It is therefore a bitter irony that Root's less talented partner, Daniel Burnham, is cited in most modern encyclopedias as one of the founders of the Chicago School of Architecture, while Root---especially at the time of Hoffman's 1973 book---often is not. After all, it was Root's creative genius that propelled the firm of Burnham and Root into international focus at the moment of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago.
Root's relative anonymity began with that exposition, for he had died two years earlier of pneumonia. He had been set to rise to certain international stardom as consulting architect for the exposition. He had planned to feature American forms, not European ones. He submitted the site plan and died unexpectedly the same month.
His site plan was mostly realized, but not so his thematic proposal, which was overwhelmed by Parisian Beaux Arts designs. This lost opportunity was also America's loss. Burnham was largely to blame: he was chief of construction, and he inexplicably countered Root's American theme. The resulting exposition design under Burnham's leadership merely repeated a previous European showcase.
Because of the European theme of the Chicago Exposition, the Chicago School was set back a decade. Even worse, architects all over America emulated the exposition. To this day, the American landscape suffers the influence of the Chicago Exposition. One is left to marvel at how different America would look today had Root lived even long enough to guide the exposition to American forms.
About 97% of Root's buildings were razed in the first sixty years of the Twentieth Century, primarily because the business district of Chicago can't grow outwards because of geography. Therefore, it must grow upwards, and that means taller buildings are forever replacing tall buildings, Root's included.
Root's legacy is indeed full of ironies.
Root's Roots Hoffman's important work on this book is singularly responsible for reviving Root's place in architectural history. In the quarter century that has passed since Hoffman's book was published, Root is now accepted by historians, though not the general public.
If there is a weakness in Hoffman's book, it is the spare attention given to Root's life outside Chicago. Here are three details which would have rounded out this otherwise splendid book:
(1) Root was born in my hometown of Lumpkin, Georgia in 1850. I remember the commanding wooden two-story home in which he was born. It was torn down about 1963. Adding to the Root irony, his birthplace today is occupied by a simple brick house. Most natives of his hometown know nothing more than the text of a historical marker about Root, which seems to point out this modern house.
(2) John Wellborn Root's father, Sidney, invented international business in Atlanta. Sidney engineered Atlanta's economic boom which began during the Civil War and has yet to stop.
(3) Root named his masterpiece, the Monadnock, to honor his father, whose family admired Daniel Webster. Webster lived near Mt. Monadnock in New Hampshire.
Root's Future A recent weekend in Chicago took me to three of Root's remaining buildings. One of them, the Monadnock, bowled me over. It is hard to believe that it could have been built in the Nineteenth Century, for it seems fresh even today.
My visit also led me to Donald Hoffman's book, which has now inspired us locals to recognize John Wellborn Root's 150th birthday in January, 2000. Hoffman has thus dispersed one more of Root's ironies---Root's hometown will never forget him again.

Excellent critical review of the work of skyscraper pioneer
By A Customer
John Wellborn Root's short life was elemental in the development of the early skyscraper. With his partner, Daniel Burnham, Root quickly climbed the social ladder in his adopted city of Chicago, receiving commissions to design South Side mansions for industrialists in the 1870s. The firm of Burnham & Root quickly rose to great acclaim designing commercial buildings such as the Grannis Block and the 10 story Montauk Block, credited as the first building ever referred to as a skyscraper. Root engineered several key technological improvements that made the tall building possible, including the use of a steel within a concrete foundation and was, along with contemporaries William LeBaron Jenney and Holabird & Roche, involved in the use of metal interior frame to support a large building's weight, rather than the historic use of masonry load-bearing walls. Root's Second Rand McNally Building was the world's first building to be supported only on a steel frame. The 22 story Masonic Temple was the world's tallest building when completed in 1892. Root's designs generally frankly expressed their structure in a Romaneque manner, being instrumental in the creation of the so-called "Chicago" or "commercial style". Yet his work was often beautiful, as seen in the Women's Temple, Rookery and Monadnock- the latter two critically-acclaimed structures still standing in Chicago.
Root was an accomplished orator and reader, and if he had not died in 1891 at age 41, he, rather than Louis Sullivan, may have become the spokesman of the Chicago style. The artuiculate Root wrote many articles in trade magazines and spoke at architectual forums, speaking of his architectual theories. Certainly Root was a witty, pleasant gentleman greatly admired by his peers.
Nevertheless, Hoffman's book is not uncritical; the book looks at the failures and the minor commisisons of churches, train stations, and the like. A complete history of Root's work is presented with special emphasis is placed on the most important works listed above. Hoffman's book is well footnoted and his conclusions are supported by the evidence. After the first chapter, Hoffman mostly eschews biography, focusing on Root's career.
The book is interesting and rich in details. Hoffman explores the dynamics of Burnham & Root's successful partnership whereby Root, the designer, handled the drawing, and Burnham, the planner, laid out interior floor plans and handled the "jaw work" in talking to clients.
The relationship with Burnham is interesting for it is Burnham who is best remembered today for his later work in the city planning movement. Although Root's buildings have mostly been demolished as their cities, Chicago, Kansas City, San Francisco and others, have grown upward, several survive and this book keeps the memories of the others alive.
